Categorical files

Subseries consists of records relating to various categories of subjects associated with Vancouver and with British Columbia in general. Arrangement is alphabetical first by subject category, then by subcategory, then by file title.

Aerial survey photographs

Subseries consists of 25 x 25cm b&w photographs, each showing a perpendicular view along the False Creek area of Vancouver. Printed by Lockwood Survey Corporation, Ltd., and Sierra Survey Corporation, Ltd.. Job number 73-126; items 69420-69463 (incomplete set). Likely used as an initial survey for the False Creek Development Project in the 1970s.

Centennial program prints, photographs, and congratulatory messages

Subseries consists of prints, photographs, and congratulatory messages sent to Mayor Harcourt and the City of Vancouver from other North American cities in response to a letter inviting cities to take part in the Vancouver Centennial. The idea was proposed by the Vancouver Centennial Commission and sponsored by Federal Express Co. as their gift to the city.

Architectural drawings on microfiche

Sub-series consists of microfilm copies of Building Department, later Permits and Licensing Department files of architectural drawings, predominantly containing drawings submitted as part of building permit applications. Some of the files in this sub-series consist wholly or in part, of drawings held in sub-series 1.

Hoy Yin Association records

Subseries consists of records relating to the functions of the Hoy Yin Association, a benevolent association that was active in Vancouver in the 20th century and that appears to have ceased its operations in the 1970s. The subseries includes records of donations, Association elections, and Association membership; publications of other benevolent associations and community organizations; personal correspondence and photographs sent to or from various men living in Vancouver, who may have been members of the Hoy Yin Association, and their families, friends, and associates; and two C.I.36 certificates.

General company correspondence

Subseries consists of correspondence maintained by the Vancouver office of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company. Records include letters and telegrams received, copies of letters and telegrams sent, and additional materials, such as receipts, lists, reports, and other materials. Correspondents include company officials, various government offices, suppliers (such as Mine Safety Appliances Company and the Home Oil Company), financial institutions (including the Montreal Trust Company and the Royal Bank), professional associations (such as the Mining Association of B.C., and the Industrial Association of B.C.), and other individuals and organizations. Subseries also includes the 1908 version of McNeill's Code, which was used to send coded telegrams.

Photographs

Subseries consists of photographs, arranged loosely and in files and albums, slides, transparencies and related textual material pertaining to events and activities taking place during the Centennial year and the years previous to 1986. Includes photographs of events organized by the Vancouver Centennial Commission, community events and activities, sporting events, as well as promotional photographs, including photographs of Centennial mascot Tillicum.

Culture, health and recreation

Subseries consists of records relating to functional units of the City including the Health Department, the Board of Parks and Recreation, the Vancouver Public Library, the Civic Theatres Department, and the general issues associated with these functional areas, as they came before Council for decision-making or information purposes. Also included are files pertaining to the primary special events held in Vancouver (e.g. Expo 86, the Sea Festival, etc.). Subseries is divided into the following filing system subdivisions:

Housing

Subseries consists of records documenting policy development, regulation, and funding of the non-commercial housing sector (subsidized and special needs housing), as well as the regulation of unusual housing (e.g. live-aboards, strata title development, etc.) and rental controls, as the foregoing came before City Council for decision-making. Subseries divided into the following filing system subdivisions:

Residential funding;
Residential housing; and
Transient accommodation.

Property development

Subseries relates to two types of property: City owned property (its own real estate holdings) and all non-City owned property in Vancouver (as considered through the city planning functions). These files document City Council decision-making on the property related issues brought before it. The work of the Properties Division (later Housing and Properties Department, and later still, the Real Estate Division) is represented in the "City property" sections, while the work of the Planning Department is represented in broad planning issues (e.g. commericial, industrial, and waterfront), as well as the more specific "historical preservation", "local area planning", and "zoning" functions. Properties activities were generally supported by opinions from Engineering and Finance, while Planning activities also involved Engineering, Finance, and Social Planning Departments, as applicable. The subseries is divided into the following filing system subdivisions:

Trade and industry

Subseries consists of records relating to inter-departmental and Council involvement in promoting economic development in Vancouver, further to the increased profile of the city during Expo 86. (In 1977 the Industrial Development Office was established (it was soon called the Economic Development Office, and in 1978 the Business Advisory Board (later called the Vancouver Economic Advisory Commission) began meeting; see the related records field below.) Subseries is divided into the following filing system subdivisions (which are further subdivided):

Community and environmental protection

Subseries consists of records relating primarily to Council decision-making on Fire and Police matters, but also including by-law enforcement of air and water pollution, garbage disposal, transportation of dangerous goods, noise, sign and billboard control, and a variety of social and global issues. Subseries is divided into the following filing system subdivisions:

Committees, boards and commissions

Subseries consists of the working files of City committees, boards, commissions and task forces, reference files pertaining to the City's involvement in the governing of the Greater Vancouver Regional District, reference files relating to additional outside bodies in which the City retains membership or representation (e.g. Metropolitan Board of Health), and the supporting documents of Council's special committees. Records consist primarily of minutes, correspondence, and reports. Subseries is divided into the following filing system subdivisions:

Greater Vancouver Regional District;
Outside committees, boards and commissions;
Special committees of Council; and

Commercial regulations

Subseries contains documents supporting Council decision-making on issues relating to permits and licenses applications, permits and licenses violations, hours of business violations, and vehicles for hire (e.g. taxis and towing vehicles) applications and violations: those cases which required ruling by Council according to existing by-laws. Subseries is divided into the following filing system subdivisions:
Commercial regulations ("policy and procedure", "general", etc.);

Permits/licenses violations;
Shopping hours / hours of business; and
Vehicles for hire.

Civic grants and loans

Subseries consists of documents relating to City Council decision-making on the City's grants to social services organizations, cultural organizations, recreational organizations, and others. Included with some applications are submissions from the applicants. Subseries is divided into the following filing system subdivisions:

Streets, transportation and utilities

Subseries consists of Council reports and other records relating to the following Engineering Department functions: street and highway planning, building and maintenance; traffic engineering (including the planning and street building that went into Skytrain station areas); public transportation planning and monitoring (buses, Seabus, Skytrain, West Coast Express, bicycle transportation, etc.); street naming; local improvements planning and execution; and sewer and water system planning, construction and maintenance. Subseries consists of records relating to administrative matters of the City at large, including general administration (e.g. organization and structure), Council chamber and personnel matters, civic and non-civic celebratory events (including sister city liaison), and administrative functional areas of the City including Personnel, Law, and Communications. Membership case files

Subseries consists of records documenting application for and approval of membership in the Association.

The subseries contains case files of received and/or approved applications for various categories of membership, often with supporting documentation including: copies of supporting primary documents to demonstrate unbroken lineage from a Loyalist ancestor, copies of awarded certificates (if applicable), and in some cases associated correspondence.

Community Arts Council News

Subseries consists of records relating to the production of the "Community Arts Council News," which disseminates information on arts events and resources to the arts community. Included in the subseries is correspondence, evaluations, and issues of the publication for the period 1948-1974.

Adrian Alexandria de Vander Vogue photographs

Sub-series consists of sixteen photograph albums showing the life of Robert Pogue and his career as drag queen Adrian Alexandria de Vander Vogue. A note written by Ron Dutton in October 2011 was enclosed in the box with the photographs: "Photographic albums of Robert Pogue's career as female impersonator Alexandria de Vander Vogue. 16 photographic albums covering his teenage years in 1960's Hamilton, Ont. to his death in 1992 Vancouver. Donated to the G+L Archives by Sandy Lambert [on] Oct. 20, 2011, who inherited the albums. Condition: albums were disorganized; some photos had adhered to album pages, others had come loose; spiral bindings beginning to rust; album covers and pages deteriorating. Where possible photos were dated from existing archives sources and persons identified. Albums were placed in general chronological order and numbered 1-16. Photographs were detached from pages and labelled with album number, page number, and photo position on the page. A few photos were discarded where they were highly damaged."

Photographs

Subseries consists of photographs and negatives documenting both the activities and the staff members of the Health Department. Included are photographs of graphs portraying birth and birth mortality rates.

Miscellaneous

Subseries consists of correspondence, photographs, leaflets, newspapers, and reports regarding labour and unemployment. Arranged alphabetically by file title.

Banners

Subseries consists of original banners designed for the Summer Street Banner Program and two banners for the 1997 APEC conference. There are gaps in the sets and in the years covered.

Edgar Bloomfield files and other material

Subseries consists of correspondence and research notes related to the life, career and estate of Edgar Bloomfield, as well as ledgers and journals generated during his career as a lawyer and investor in the Canadian Power Generating Machine Co. Ltd. Subseries also includes 3 sketchbooks by Edgar Bloomfield.

Miscellaneous photographs

Subseries consists of all photographs which were collected by the Vancouver Museum, excluding all photographs by Philip T. Timms and Erwin R. Gordon. Photographs were collected on a variety of subjects, mostly within the City of Vancouver, but also encompassing the Greater Vancouver area, and some sites in the Fraser Valley and other parts of British Columbia. Subjects of photographs include: buildings (such as houses, hotels, commercial buildings, churches, theatres, municipal buildings, hospitals, schools, banks, retail stores, and other buidings); streets, roads, highways, and trails; bridges; beaches (especially English Bay and Second Beach); waterfront areas; parks (especially sites in Stanley Park); views of Downtown Vancouver from various sites; monuments, statues, and fountains (including arches for royal visits); rivers and dams; farms and ranches; logging and lumbering scenes; streetcars and other railway cars and engines; carriages, carts, and automobiles; construction and demolotion scenes; and other subjects. The subseries also includes various photographs of people, including; individual and family studio portraits; athletic clubs (especially hockey and lacrosse teams); Vancouver City police officers, fire fighters, Council members, Mayors, and other employees; military groups; clubs (including the Vancouver Club); people involved in recreational activities (such as bicycling, croquet, tennis, driving, and picnicing); people involved in parades and other celebrations (especially May Day and Dominion Day celebrations); and other views of people engaged in various activities.

Subseries contains a chronological file of correspondence and other items associated with Council "in camera" meetings.

Yee family photographs

Subseries consists of photographs of Gum May Yee and Gordon Yee, their children, and some of their friends and acquaintances in the area of Naicam, Saskatchewan.

Series 2

Subseries consists of photographs of ships visiting Vancouver's harbour.

Invitations

The invitations in this subseries were received by Woodside both in his capacity as alderman and later as a prominent public figure. They range from invitations to community events to state dinners, such as the Civic Luncheon given by City Council for H.R.H. The Prince of Wales, 1919.

Incoming correspondence (additional)

Subseries consists of correspondence which was found subsequent to the processing of the incoming correspondence subseries. Arranged chronologically (alphabetically by author for all undated correspondence).

Diaries

Subseries consists of 10 diaries that contain daily entries of Major Matthews' activities and thoughts. The bulk of the diaries were written between 1946 and 1969; one diary was written in 1931 and records the genesis of the archives in City Hall.
