Administrative files

This subseries contains correspondence and subject files dealing with building maintenance personnel and supplies, agendas for weekly divisional meetings, and outward correspondence. Arranged chronologically.

Administrative files

Subseries consists of notes on banner themes and artists, correspondence, media kits, three reference albums of color photostats of photographs of the banners on city streets and reference slides of banners held in the Archives.

Aerial survey photographs

Subseries consists of 25 x 25cm b&w photographs, each showing a perpendicular view along the False Creek area of Vancouver. Printed by Lockwood Survey Corporation, Ltd., and Sierra Survey Corporation, Ltd.. Job number 73-126; items 69420-69463 (incomplete set). Likely used as an initial survey for the False Creek Development Project in the 1970s.

Architectural drawings on microfiche

Sub-series consists of microfilm copies of Building Department, later Permits and Licensing Department files of architectural drawings, predominantly containing drawings submitted as part of building permit applications. Some of the files in this sub-series consist wholly or in part, of drawings held in sub-series 1.

Banners

Subseries consists of original banners designed for the Summer Street Banner Program and two banners for the 1997 APEC conference. There are gaps in the sets and in the years covered.

Blocks 42/52 development

Subseries consists of correspondence and reports re the 1967 proposal by Eaton's and the Fairview Corporation to develop Blocks 42 and 52 in the downtown area. Arranged by subject and chronologically within each subject.

Bunton project records

Subseries consists of records from a research project conducted by Dr. Perter Bunton at the City of Vancouver Health Department. The research was intended to test the hypothesis "that children born out-of-wedlock have a poorer prognosis in terms of psychosocial development than children born to comparable mohters and raised in the context of a stable home." The project was a longitudinal survey to the age of 30 months of a cohort of illegitimate babies born in Vancouver between August 14 1972 and February 14 1973. Results were compared to a control group of babies born into two-parent families during the same time period.
Records include research proposals, correspondence, computer printouts of research data, subject case files, and final report.

Business license case files

Subseries consists of letters of appeal, correspondence with the City Clerk, and relevant excerpts from Council "in camera" minutes, all relating to Council's "in camera" function as the appeal body to the business licensing decisions made by the License Inspector. Arranged alphabetically by name of appellant.

Centennial program prints, photographs, and congratulatory messages

Subseries consists of prints, photographs, and congratulatory messages sent to Mayor Harcourt and the City of Vancouver from other North American cities in response to a letter inviting cities to take part in the Vancouver Centennial. The idea was proposed by the Vancouver Centennial Commission and sponsored by Federal Express Co. as their gift to the city.

Christ Church Cathedral redevelopment plan

Subseries consists of correspondence, briefs and reports re the 1972 proposal to demolish Christ Church Cathedral and redevelop the property. Arranged by subject and chronologically within each subject.

City departments

Subseries consists of correspondence, memos and minutes pertaining to other City departments, both generated and received by the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chiefs.

Civic administration

Subseries consists of records relating to administrative matters of the City at large, including general administration (e.g. organization and structure), Council chamber and personnel matters, civic and non-civic celebratory events (including sister city liaison), and administrative functional areas of the City including Personnel, Law, and Communications. Subseries is divided into the following filing system subdivisions:

Subseries consists of Council packages (minutes, Manager's reports, budgets, etc.), and a small volume of submissions from internal departments and external organizations, all relating to City Council financial decision-making. Subseries is divided into the following filing system subdivisions:

Estimates and budgets;
Expenditures;

Revenues; and
Tenders.

Civic grants and loans

Subseries consists of documents relating to City Council decision-making on the City's grants to social services organizations, cultural organizations, recreational organizations, and others. Included with some applications are submissions from the applicants. Subseries is divided into the following filing system subdivisions:

Community services grants;
Cultural grants;
Other grants;
Recreational grants;
Environmental grants; and
Child Care grants.

Commercial regulations

Subseries contains documents supporting Council decision-making on issues relating to permits and licenses applications, permits and licenses violations, hours of business violations, and vehicles for hire (e.g. taxis and towing vehicles) applications and violations: those cases which required ruling by Council according to existing by-laws. Subseries is divided into the following filing system subdivisions:
Commercial regulations ("policy and procedure", "general", etc.);
Permits/licenses applications;
Permits/licenses violations;
Shopping hours / hours of business; and
Vehicles for hire.
Records include Council minutes, Manager's reports, correspondence from applicants, petitions and correspondence from the public, inter-departmental correspondence, and occasionally, a variety of records put forward as exhibits or appendices. Arranged by file title and therein by start year.

Committees, boards and commissions

Subseries consists of the working files of City committees, boards, commissions and task forces, reference files pertaining to the City's involvement in the governing of the Greater Vancouver Regional District, reference files relating to additional outside bodies in which the City retains membership or representation (e.g. Metropolitan Board of Health), and the supporting documents of Council's special committees. Records consist primarily of minutes, correspondence, and reports. Subseries is divided into the following filing system subdivisions:
City committees, boards, commissions and task forces;
Greater Vancouver Regional District;
Outside committees, boards and commissions;
Special committees of Council; and
Standing committees of Council (1975-1978 only).

Community and environmental protection

Subseries consists of records relating primarily to Council decision-making on Fire and Police matters, but also including by-law enforcement of air and water pollution, garbage disposal, transportation of dangerous goods, noise, sign and billboard control, and a variety of social and global issues. Consultant's data forms with photographs

Subseries consists of records documenting the Second Shaughnessy and Third Shaughnessy photographic inventories conducted by students working for Robert G. Lemon Architects.

Records consist of data sheets which include information on the style, architect, date of construction, heritage classification, number of storeys, and accessory buildings for various properties, as well as a photograph. Photographs taken by Robert Lemon and assistants. The area documented is from King Edward Avenue to 41st Avenue between Maple Street and Oak Street.

Correspondence

This subseries includes only one piece of correspondence, from Major J. S. Matthews to Woodside thanking him for a recent donation of Woodside's records.

Correspondence files

These files include correspondence and memos from other City departments and officials, as well as Harcourt's correspondence with his constituents and officials in other cities. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the name of the writer (or by the name of the recipient if the correspondence was initiated by Harcourt). One file usually corresponds to one letter of the alphabet, but not all letters of the alphabet are represented. The files include both incoming letters and copies of outgoing letters.

Subseries includes correspondence 1977-1985, inquiries 1983-1986, and invitations 1981-1986. Arranged chronologically.

Subseries consists of files which document Sandra Wilking's involvement with multiculturalism and race relations. Arranged chronologically.

Correspondence, housing

Subseries consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence. Incoming correspondence consists of requests of citizens for investigation into their complaints. The outgoing correspondence consists of copies of the response to these requests for inspection. The records are arranged alphabetically by street name.

Culture, health and recreation

Subseries consists of records relating to functional units of the City including the Health Department, the Board of Parks and Recreation, the Vancouver Public Library, the Civic Theatres Department, and the general issues associated with these functional areas, as they came before Council for decision-making or information purposes. Also included are files pertaining to the primary special events held in Vancouver (e.g. Expo 86, the Sea Festival, etc.). Subseries is divided into the following filing system subdivisions:

Divisions

Subseries consists of correspondence, memos and reports to and from the various Fire Department divisions, either created or received by the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chiefs, or copied to them by the divisions.

Ephemera

This subseries includes miscellaneous pamphlets and booklet souvenirs collected by Woodside. One interesting item is an election broadside for Louis D. Taylor, former Mayor of Vancouver 1936.

Finance

Subseries consists of records pertaining to budget and expense items.

General

Subseries consists primarily of correspondence on a variety of subjects and includes invitations, letters of appreciation, complaints, requests for information, records pertaining to the Fire Department Band, and records pertaining to visits by other Fire Departments.

General Services files

Subseries contains files pertaining to the delivery of services by the City Analyst's Laboratory; Mountain View Cemetery; and homemakers, volunteers and nursing liaison services. Subseries also includes files pertaining to student training, health promotion, health planning and policy, alcohol abuse and smoking.

Government programs and committees files

Subseries contains files pertaining to the Vancouver Health Department's participation in programs and committees administered by federal, provincial, municipal and regional government branches and agencies, including the Vancouver Regional Hospital District.

Health inspection cards

Subseries consists of cards arranged alphabetically by street name. A one line entry registers the date of inspection and the Inspector's remarks on the condition of the premises. The series is available on microfilm only. Dates are approximate.
