The Townsite Story [title slide]
The Townsite Story - Automatic [slide show]
File contains a slide show called "The Townsite Story" created by M. Gerald Thomson which details some of the history, development and urban renewal of the Gastown area in the 1960s looking ahead to the 1970s. The slides were used for a public display at the Vancouver Public Library then located at the corner of Robson & Burrard where the slideshow ran on a continuous loop. The slideshow was also delivered as a presentation shown to business groups or associations. The primary reason for the creation and presentation of the slideshow was the widespread interest in and protest against Project 200 in 1967/68. The proposed development would have put freeways along the Vancouver waterfront through areas including Strathcona and Gastown.
File contains 56 35 mm color slides, many with captions, showing commercial buildings and streetscapes in Downtown Vancouver, B.C. Some slides also show automobiles, street signs, traffic signals and other city signage. Some slides are taken from existing archival photographs. Only original slides with identifiable buildings have been described.
