Biographical history
William D. McFarLand (Bill) received his Master of Social Work Degree from UBC in 1947. After serving in various government positions first in BC and then in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, he returned to BC as the assistant director of the Children's Aid Society. Mr. McFarland was a lifelong advocate for children's services, founding the Alberta Foster Parents' Association and the BC Parents in Crisis Society. He also served on the Berger Royal Commission on Family and Children's Law and assisted the Gove Inquiry.
Custodial history
The records were donated to the UBC School of Social Work by William McFarland's wife, Carol, after his death. In November 2002 and January 2003 the records were transferred from the from the School to the City of Vancouver Archives by Beverley Scott, reference librarian at Koerner Library, UBC.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of publications, reports, proposals, memoranda and other records pertaining to child and family welfare in Vancouver.
