Biographical history
William Henry Rowling was a native of Truro, Cornwall. He joined the Royal Engineers in 1848 and landed at Esquimalt in July 1858 as part of the party of Royal Engineers who were sent to survey the 49th parallel from the coast to the Rocky Mountains. After his discharge from the Army in 1862 he settled in what is now South Vancouver, where he grew grapes.

Scope and content
The collection consists of a poem written by W.H. Rowling in 1851 and a photocopy of his certificate of discharge. There is also the funeral notice of four young men who were killed on Rowling's farm in 1889.
