Biographical history
Initiated by Wendy Irish Turner and June Binkert in 1981, the West Southlands Ratepayers Association was registered as a society in 1984. Its aims are to preserve protect and improve amenities of the area; and to consider all matters affecting the property owners and residents in the area, including preservation of its rural characteristics, retention of the Point Grey Golf Course, creation and enhancement of walkways and bridle paths, and development of waterfront parks.
In 1984 out of concern for potential land exchanges, the West Southlands Ratepayers Association began communication with the City of Vancouver regarding zoning. One result of this communication was the establishment of the Southlands Citizens Planning Project Committee.
Custodial history

Scope and content
The fonds consists of textual records and photographs relating to the concerns and actions of the West Southlands Ratepayers Association. Minutes of annual general meetings as well as special meetings from 1981 to 2005 in rough and completed form. Also, portions of the minutes from the Fraser River Coalition in draft form are included. Full and partial membership lists over several years show that citizens were often members of both organizations. Brochures, pamphlets, notes and newspaper clippings are grouped into areas of interest or concern generally concerning environmental issues, zoning and land-use or wildlife within the area of Southlands such as: Deering Island, Vancouver International Airport, Musqueam Park, UBC, and Pacific Spirit Regional Park. West Southlands Ratepayers Association produced a community newsletter as well as brochures outlining these issues and concerns as well as providing a history of the area.
Correspondence to and from the association with the following: Point Grey Golf and Country Club, Vancouver City Development Permit Board, Vancouver Parks and Recreation, UBC Board of Govenors, Fish and Oceans Canada, Office of the City Clerk, Park Users Against Off-Leash Commercial Dog Groups and Lower Mainland Residents.
The photographs show land-use in Musqueam Park, Deering Island and the Celtic Slough as well as the naming ceremony of June's Pond in the Musqueam Park Wetland.
