Biographical history

The Vancouver Pioneers' Association was founded as the Vancouver Pioneers' Society in 1893 as a social organization for people who arrived in Vancouver prior to the Great Fire. The society ceased to meet in the late 1890s but was revived in 1911. Since 1911 membership rules have been altered on several occasions and membership is now open to all persons who have resided in Vancouver for forty-five or more years. Members included Vancouverites such as M.A. MacLean, David Oppenheimer, H.O. Alexander, Charles Woodward, Don Bellamy, Howard Green, and Dal Richards.

The Association organized their first annual banquet in 1912 and helped host the anniversary of the 1886 Great Fire, incorporation, Jubilee and other City anniversary celebrations. In July 1993, a cairn and plaque was established in Stanley Park to commemorate the centenary of the Association. In more recent decades, the Association continued to hold an annual Birthday Party for incorporation and Christmas banquet for members. In 2007, an Anthology of members’ stories was published. The Association eventually dissolved in 2010.
