History
In 1986, the City of Vancouver and the City of Los Angeles formally entered into a sister city relationship as Vancouver mayor Mike Harcourt signed a sister city agreement with Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley. A year later, the City formed a civic committee, The Vancouver Los Angeles Sister City Committee, in 1987 to increase understanding and exchange between the two sisters, and to establish a formal organizational structure for the committee. This led to the formation of the Vancouver Los Angeles Sister City Society (VLASCS) in 1988. The Society was incorporated on August 18, 1988 and Don Hamilton became the Society’s first Chairman. The objectives of the society were:
- To promte and maintain a cultural, economic, scientific and educational relationship between the City of Vancouver and the City of Los Angeles.
- To conduct seminars and meetings, to inform the public and foster understanding about the cultural, economic and intellectual relations between Vancouver and Los Angeles.
The Society organized various events and activities to fulfill its objectives and especially helping to develop film industry in Vancouver by raising funds and arranging film producers in Los Angeles to visit Vancouver. The Society became inactive in the 2000s and dissolved in 2009.
