Biographical history
The Vancouver Civic New Democrats was founded in 1987 in order to give the organization an official presence at the municipal election. At the party’s founding convention on October 7, 1987, a constitution was adopted and an executive was elected. The purpose of the organization was to formulate BC New Democratic Party policy to the City of Vancouver and educate the public on the matters of municipal concerns, and to offer candidates for municipal election. The first elected executives were:
President: Jeff Hoskins
Vice-President: Sadie Kuehn
Secretary: Sandra Bruneau
Treasurer: Jean McMurdo
Membership Secretary: Dawn Neuman
Organizer: Jean Lawrence
Fund-Raiser: Joy McPhail
City Council Liaison: Shane Simpson
Park Board Liaison: Darryl Jognson
School Boards Liaison: John Church
In the 1988 Vancouver municipal election, the Vancouver Civic New Democrats worked with COPE (Coalition of Progressive Electors) under the Unity Banner to run candidates for City Council, School Board and Park Board. Their first School Board Trustee, Anne Beer, was elected that year. The Vancouver Civic New Democrats had further success in the 1990 Vancouver municipal election when Anne Beer and John Cheng were both elected as School Board Trustees, and Garry Thorne was elected as Park Board Commissioner.
In 1993, the Vancouver Civic New Democrats and COPE decided to merge in order to create a stronger alliance between the City’s left-wing parties.
