Biographical history

In 1858 the Governor of the Crown Colony of British Columbia ordered the construction of a church at Derby. The Church of St. John the Divine was erected, with the Reverend William Burton Crickmer as its first rector. Early in 1860 the Church was closed. It was unused until 1882 when it was transported across the river to Maple Ridge. The Church administered to the Yale, Maple Ridge and Langley districts. It has enjoyed the distinction of the first church built in British Columbia (not including the Colony of Vancouver Island).
