Biographical history
In the early 1980's the following associations: West Southlands Ratepayers Association, Chairperson Wendy Irish Turner, the Blenheim Ratepayers Association, Chairperson George Simpson and the Angus Lands Ratepayer's Association, Chairperson Dr. Trevor Sandy presented to the Vancouver City Council the need for a planning process for the area now know as Southlands. The Vancouver City Council agreed to this need resulting in the Southlands Citizens Planning Project which included both citizens and city planners. The Southlands Citizens Planning Project members met with city planners weekly to developing zoning initiatives and in November 1984 City Council approved funding for the project. On March 8, 1988 The Southland Plan: Southlands Citizens Planning Committee Plan was completed and published.
A variety of media was consulted and accumulated for research and education purposes. Committee statements and minutes were created to act as a record of the process. The Southland Plan: Southlands Citizens Planning Committee Plan was created to establish a planning process.
Geographically the projects aims revolve around a parcel of land that is defined by the Musqueaum Reserve, Angus Street, SW Marine Drive and the south end of the Fraser River (clearly defined by the map shown in the Southlands Plan). Some of the resolutions of this project include prevention of widening SW Marine Drive as well as the Fraser Foreshore Trails along the Fraser River.
