Name of creator
Major J.S. Matthews was a native of North Wales who arrived in Vancouver in 1898 from New Zealand. He was with Imperial Oil for most of the period 1898-1920 and held various executive positions during the twenties. In 1933 he became City Archivist for Vancouver, a position he held until his death.
Scope and content
Item is a print of a map by Major James Skitt Matthews, City Archivist, showing villages, landmarks and rivers of Howe Sound and Burrard Inlet using their indigenous names. The map also shows elevations and wildlife populating the area. It was compiled between 1931 and 1937, with the assistance of August Jack Haatsalano (Khahtsahlano), whose attestation is included on the map. Notes on the map explain the map's nomenclature.
Cardboard mount is torn in several places around the edges.
Immediate source of acquisition
Map had previously been alienated from its original fonds and placed in AM1594.
