Biographical history

The Vancouver Local (No. 280) of the Sheet Metal Workers' International Association received its Charter in 1902 from the Amalgamated Sheet Metal Workers' International Association. In 1906 it affiliated with the Vancouver Trades and Labour Council. It also joined the Local Building Trades Council and, eventually, the Metal Trades Council. It joined the B.C. Federation of Labour in 1911. In 1913 it joined the North West District Council. Local No. 280 was involved in a number of issues, such as sending a delegate to the Asiatic Exclusion League, opposition to Chinese labour by local fruit growers, opposition to the enfranchisement of Orientals, opposition to foreign-speaking labour in and around Vancouver, opposition to conscription during World War I, participation in general strikes of 1919, and a demand to re-establish the Canadian Merchant Marine.
