Scope and content
This item is the third volume of Robert Eldridge Malkin's diary of his trip through Great Britain and several European countries in 1937.
Volume three starts on September 13, 1937, when Malkin was still in London. In October, Malkin noted that he had secured a position as a tea taster, and in some of the following entries he described visits to London tea auction houses, tea tasting rooms, and a large tea factory. This volume of the diary also chronicles Malkin’s trip to Paris to visit the World Exposition there, and his return by ship to New York City and travel by bus back to Vancouver, stopping in various American cities along the way, and arriving home on December 19, 1937. The last entry in the diary is titled “Reflections” and is not dated, but it is likely that Malkin made it in April 1937.
This volume of Malkin's diary, like the two that accompany it, includes photographs, which are mostly captioned, and which were predominantly taken by Malkin or his travelling companions. These photos show places Malkin visited and people with whom he socialized during his sojourn. Each volume of the diary also includes clippings from magazines and newspapers that Malkin added to compliment his text.
In addition, each volume of the diary includes the names of many of the people whom Malkin encountered during his travels. While in England, and particularly London, Malkin met with many former Vancouverites, among them members of the Bell-Irving, Spencer, Hamber, Taylor, Bloedel, Reifle, Farris, and Rogers families (including Rosemary Elisabeth Rogers, Malkin’s future wife), as well as other friends, former schoolmates, relatives, and family acquaintances. Each volume of Malkin's diary also contains remarks and observations that refer to Vancouver and other places on B.C.’s west coast.
