Scope and content

Series consists of photographs taken of the Paralympic Torch Relay (PTR). The PTR took place over ten days from March 3-12, 2010. The images in this series were selected by VANOC staff/contractors from the daily images taken by the photographers assigned to cover the relay, to be used for promotional puproses by VANOC and the PTR corporate sponsor, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). Each day of the PTR contained similar components: a Flame Creation ceremony conducted by representatives from a First Nation local to the place the PTR was occuring on that day, a Community Celebration event with performers and speakers, and the relay itself. The itinerary for the relay was:

Day 1 - Wed. Mar. 3, 2010 - Ottawa, Ont.
Day 2 - Thu. Mar. 4, 2010 - Quebec City, Que.
Day 3 - Fri. Mar. 5, 2010 - Toronto, Ont.
Day 4 - Sat. Mar. 6, 2010 - Esquimalt and Victoria, BC
Day 5 - Sun. Mar. 7, 2010 - Squamish, BC
Day 6 - Mon. Mar. 8, 2010 - Whistler, BC
Day 7 - Tue. Mar. 9, 2010 - Lytton and Hope, BC
Day 8 - Wed. Mar 10, 2010 - Maple Ridge and Vancouver (Riley Park), BC
Day 9 - Thu. Mar. 11, 2010 - Vancouver and University of British Columbia, BC
Day 10 - Fr. Mar 12, 2010 - Vancouver, BC

Arrangement

Photographs from the Torch Relay were received from VANOC on a 1TB detachable hard drive. Photographs taken during the relay were saved onto this drive by contractor Image Media Farm (IMF). The images on the drive were organized into directories based on the day the image was taken, with sub-directories as shown in the example below:

PTR Day [#]
|--01-Original Files
| |--Card 1
| |--Card 2
| |--Card 3
| |--Card 4
|--02-Highlights
| |--PTR1 Celebrations
| |--PTR1 RBC Uploads
| |--PTR1 TB Uploads
| |--PTR1 VANOC Uploads
|--03-VANOC Selections
|--04-RBC Selections
|--05-Crew
|--06-TB Selections
|--07-Other

All source images taken by the PTR photographers were saved under the '01-Original Files' directory. Selected photos were copied into the other sub-directories, but the use of the sub-directories was inconsistent from day-to-day. Most sub-directories were not used (e.g., '07-Other' was never used). Images in this series come from the '02-Highlights' to '06-TB Selections' directories. The directory structure has been flattened to simplify the archival arrangement, and file titles are based on the corresponding directory paths.

Some source images were copied by IMF into multiple sub-directories, resulting in duplicate copies of these images being created in the 'selected' sub-directories. Duplicate images were not removed by the Archives. The duplicated images may have different titles, depending on the descriptive metadata present in the individual file metadata.
