Scope and content

Series consists of records of the Metropolitan Vancouver Athletic and Arts Association (MVAAA), created and acquired by Richard Dopson in his role as co-founder and Director of the MVAAA.

The MVAAA, formed in order to have a legal entity that could carry out the responsibilities associated with hosting the Gay Games in Vancouver, was inspired by and based on San Francisco Arts & Athletics, the association that had founded the Gay Games and organized Gay Games I and II. In preparation for its Gay Games bid, the MVAAA also established and organized the Vancouver Gay and Lesbian Summer Games, which served as trial sporting events to ensure that Vancouver would have the ability to plan and manage an athletic event similar to the Gay Games. The series includes material accumulated from San Francisco Arts & Athletics as well, which was used for research and reference purposes in the formation of the MVAAA and the organization Gay Games III in Vancouver.

The series contains the administrative and operational records of the MVAAA and its predecessor organisations. Records in the series include correspondence and notes; minutes, agendas and notes of meetings; publications and ephemera; and photographs, audio and video recordings primarily regarding Gay Games III.
