"On 07 July 1991, shortly after being launched, a small pleasure craft caught fire and was abandoned by its occupants. The burning boat drifted into the creosote-soaked pilings of the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) Kitsilano pier and set them ablaze. The pier and the CCG base building, housing the CCG Regional Search and Rescue (SAR) Administration and the local SAR operations centre, were completely destroyed. Three CCG vessels and several vehicles were also destroyed. . . "
