The collection consists of an illuminated address presented to Lord Stanley of Preston, Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of his visit to Vancouver in 1889. Lord Stanley of Preston, Governor General of Canada, and Lady Stanley visited Vancouver in October 1889. It was the first vice-royal visit to the new city. He dedicated Stanley Park on October 29. The address presented a program for the development of Vancouver.

Immediate source of acquisition
According to Major Matthews, the original illuminated scroll, presented October 29, 1889, at "Supplejack's Grove", Chaythoos, First Narrows, Stanley Park, to His Excellency Lord Stanley of Preston, Governor General of Canada and Lady Stanley, by the Citizens of Vancouver, was preserved at Knowsley, Prescot, Lancashire, England, for fifty years, and then generously re-presented by his son, the Rt. Hon. The Earl of Derby, K.G., who, in 1889, acted as aide-de-camp to his father on that occasion, to the City Archives, City Hall, Vancouver, Canada (Add.MSS 54, vol. 13, file 4325).
