John Sprott was born in Glenhill, Wigtonshire. He came to Ontario in 1870, and then to British Columbia in 1873. He entered provincial government service in 1878 as an immigration agent and superintendent of roads and worked for the provincial government for 35 years.

The fonds consists of two letterbooks (1885-1888, 1899) of outward letters from Sprott, Road Inspector, concerning road building and maintenance, primarily in the Lower Mainland.
