Biographical history
James Kennedy (1820-1900) was an early settler and architect in New Westminster.
He was born in Ballymena, Co. Antrim, Ireland, and graduated in architecture from Queens University, Belfast. He emigrated to North America at the age of 21, and after travelling extensively, sailed to the goldfields of Victoria, Australia in November of 1852. He remained in Australia for less than one year, sailing for San Francisco in June of 1853.
In April of 1859, Kennedy settled in New Westminster with his wife and son, and practiced architecture there until his death.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of a typescript copy of a diary kept by James Kennedy during his trip to Australia. The fonds also includes a handwritten copy of a portion of the diary.

The records were copied by the Archives in 1941 from originals held by Mr. Brian Boru Kennedy of New Westminster.
