This fonds is a chronologically-ordered body of records from the personal and work life of Malcolm F. Crane; it also represents a significant sub-group of the records of certain organizations such as SEARCH, PFA, and PCF. Personal papers include correspondence, school assignments, certificates, yearbooks, memorabilia from travels, photographs, and a variety of mostly unpublished literary and academic works including poems, short stories, plays, novels, and essays. Some of these works explore the theme of homosexuality. Records dating from after Crane's death include health records, documents relating to his funeral service and memorial bench, obituaries and tributes, and news coverage of his death (video).
Work papers reflect Crane's involvement in a variety of human rights and gay/lesbian organizations. Larger bodies of records include: correspondence, minutes, reports, briefs, and newsletters from SEARCH (Society for Education Action Research and Counselling on Homosexuality), 1974 - 1983; correspondence, minutes, memos, reports, and conference papers (especially relating to "Coalition on Children" and "Conference on the Family") from SPARC (Social Planning and Review Council of B.C.), 1976 - 1981; records of the PFA (Pride Festival Association) relating to the organization and running of the annual festival including minutes, financial statements, speeches, artists' contracts, event registrations, publicity, plans, photographs etc., 1984 - 1990; and records of the PCF (Pride Community Foundation - an umbrella organization, and the PFA's successor), including both festival records and those related to other programs such as the Witness Assistance Program and the television show "Prism", 1991 - 1993. Also in this category are papers of the IAL / GPC (International Association of Lesbian / Gay Pride Co-ordinators), particularly those relating to the organization of the 1989 conference ("Interpride '89") in Vancouver, which was hosted by the PFA.
Smaller bodies of records include correspondence, minutes, financial statements, constitution, and newsletters from the GLL (The Gay Leisure Link), 1979 - 1993; festival-related records from the PWCC (Pride Week Co-ordinating Committee, predecessor to the PFA), 1984; correspondence, notes, and clippings from the P/GLC (Police / Gay Liaison Committee), 1982 - 1993; minutes and reports of the Outreach Committee, Ryerson United Church, 1976 - 1977; correspondence, minutes, reports, financial statements, and newsletters of the VGCC (Vancouver Gay Community Centre), 1979 - 1993; and various other organizations.
The fonds also contains publications on general social issues (including government publications and works published by SPARC), and publications on gay / lesbian issues and interests. In addition to photographs, non-textual materials include festival buttons, video cassettes (notably episodes of "Prism", a gay / lesbian community affairs program, news coverage of the Pride Festival, and home videos), and audiocassettes on various topics.
