Vancouver - The City

Item is a documentary film documenting prominent buildings in downtown Vancouver on and around Granville Street, Burrard Street, Georgia Street, and Robson Square. These buildings include the Marine Building, Provincial Court House, Hotel Vancouver, Scotiabank Tower, Vancouver Block, Dominion Building, Eatons Building, BC Electric/Hydro Building, TD Tower, Bayshore Inn, Westcoast Energy Building, and several other skyscrapers. Film also includes footage of Granville Street street scenes, a trolley bus, and Robson Square under construction.

Vancouver By Night

Item is a documentary film documenting downtown Vancouver at night and is mostly made up of footage of neon and illuminated electric signs on Granville Street and in Chinatown. The film documents Granville Street at night, with crowds on the sidewalks and many illuminated electric signs visible, including those of the Orpheum, Vogue, and Odeon theatres. Also included is footage of a lighted fountain, the Hudson's Bay Company Building, and traffic signals. The film also documents the neon signs of a numerous restaurants and businesses in Chinatown, including the Marco Polo Restaurant, Ho Ho Chop Suey, the South Seas, Cathay Importers Company Limited, Ho Inn Chop Suey, Ming's, Asia Garden, and Loon Foon Kwok restaurant.

Item is an amateur film documenting sculptures at the UBC campus, including George Norris' "Mother and Child," Haida and Kwakiutl totem poles at the corner of University Blvd. and East Mall, and Charles Wheeler's "King George VI." There is also footage of the Vancouver Caledonian Games, which begins with a parade of drummers, pipers, and dancers; then footage of Scottish country dancing, kids under thirteen dancing the Sailors Hornpipe, and girls dancing the Highland Fling.

PNE Parade - Start of the RCMP Musical Ride

Item is an amateur film documenting the 1958 Vancouver Pacific National Exhibition Parade and British Columbia scenery. The film begins with footage of floats in the P.N.E parade. Identified floats and performers include the train from Montreal to Port Moody 1886, New Westminster, Comox Valley, Sannich, Vancouver Fire Department, Fraser Expedition, Canadian Order of Foresters, The Moonlighters, Horseshoe Bay, and the P.N.E Minstrel Band. Businesses and buildings shown include Standard Stations, British American Oil Company, Canadian Pacific Railroad, Radio CKWX 1130, Hotel Vancouver, Georgia Hotel, the Provincial Courthouse, and Pacific Western Airlines. Footage also shows downtown street banners. The second half of the film includes footage of the RCMP riding onto Hastings Park racetrack in formation in front of an RCMP band being conducted and a crowd. Houses in the Hastings-Sunrise area to the east of Hastings Park are also shown.

Item is an amateur film documenting the 1958 Vancouver Pacific National Exhibition Parade and British Columbia scenery. The film begins with footage probably taken from a Kettle Valley Railroad train going through the Okanagan. The film ends with footage of floats in the P.N.E parade. Identified floats and performers include Shell, White Spot, and the New Westminster Shrine Club General Band. Businesses shown include Oscar's, Standard Stations, British American Oil Company, Canadian Pacific Railroad, and Pacific Western Airlines.

1953 Edition of "Stars on Ice" featuring Sonja Henie

Item is an amateur film documenting the Vancouver Skating Club's 1953 production of "Stars on Ice" featuring Sonja Henie. Other featured skaters include: Elaine Dawson, Diane Henderson, Jeanne and Thornton Opie, Jocelyn and Rothero Thacker, Audrey and Bill Corson, Jan Tors, Bill Lewis, Arlene McFarlane, Irene Turtle, Bill Corson, Marshall Beard, Loyette Shatilla, Gladys and Victor Hartley, Edy Rada, and Lorrie Perkins. Images also include a 150-pound cake presented by the VSC to Sonja Henie for her birthday.

Jack Cullen Films - Owl Theatre

Item is a film reel containing segments of the "Owl Prowl" show improvised by Jack Cullen for KVOS television in Bellingham, Washington. In these segments, Cullen introduces the evening's film and does commercials for the show's sponsors, White Spot in Vancouver and Campbell Motors at 1234 Kingsway Street, as well as the 'Channel Master Rainbow Television Antenna' and the 'Egg Alarm'. Cullen's wife Joy appears in some of the commercials.

For Twenty Cents a Day

Item is a documentary film documenting work shortages during the Depression of the 1930s and the attempts to deal with the unemployed, in particular young men. The film discusses the establishment of relief camps and projects, where men were paid twenty cents per day; the founding of organizations such as the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), Workers' Unity League, and Relief Camp Workers' Union; general unionization and protest of the unemployed, including the On To Ottawa Trek, Regina Riot, sit-in strike from May to June 1938 at the Vancouver Main Post Office, Vancouver Art Gallery and Hotel Georgia, and the resulting Bloody Sunday of June 19. Archival footage and photographs complement the narration. The film includes interviews with Syd Thompson, a participant in the On To Ottawa Trek and later a leader of the IWA Vancouver local, Steve Brodie, leader of the Vancouver sit-in, and poet Dorothy Livesay.

Vancouver Jubilee

Item is a promotional film showing the Diamond Jubilee celebration events, a brief history of Vancouver and concludes with footage of Vancouver after 1945. The film shows historical photographs of Vancouver and focuses on various aspects of development in Vancouver including industry, media, communications, transportation, power plants, city planning, city governance, tourism and architecture.

The film was commissioned by the Vancouver Jubilee Publicity Committee and later sponsored by the British Columbia Electric Company Ltd.

The film shows Estelle Crocker at their residence at 7347 West Boulevard, driving in Vancouver, the 2600 block of Granville Street, building construction, the interior and exterior of Dr. Farquhar's office where Estelle Crocker worked as a medical office assistance, the interior of the residence and Joe the family dog.

Capilano

Item is a promotional film for the British Properties Limited, Capilano Estates containing title cards. The film shows the properties including houses, the golf course, the tool house, the club house and surrounding landscape. The film also shows the clearing of land by British Properties.

Pacific Great Eastern Railway - 1949

Item is a film showing the Pacific Great Eastern Railway. Titles at the beginning note that this train travels through the Cariboo, and central and northern British Columbia. Most of the film shows scenery from a moving train, likely travel ling down the B.C. coast. Towards the end of the film, the train arrives at its final destination, Howe Sound. The camera operator boards a ferry which travels west along the Burrard Inlet to Vancouver’s harbor. There are shots of the Lions Gate Bridge, and the Vancouver skyline.

Central Park

Item is a film showing the Central Park Interurban line, and of the city from aboard the interurban. Notable scenes include parts of downtown Vancouver, Hastings Street and what appears to be the line along Vanness Avenue, now the Expo skytrain line. Street signs, buildings, houses, signboards and greenery are shown.

Fairview Belt Line

Item is a film showing footage of and from aboard the Fairview Belt Interurban line. Streetcars, automobiles, trucks, cyclists and pedestrians are shown. Areas include: Granville Street, Broadway, Main Street, Hastings Street, the Connaught Bridge, and Broadway from Granville to Main. Businesses, street signs, billboards and business signs are shown throughout.

Spring

Film shows children playing in front of a suburban house, adults around the house sitting and mowing the lawn. After a very dark section around 01:45 the film goes on to show a family exploring a wooded area and playing with a front-end loader in a parking lot and a couple of brief scenes of cows.

Item is a documentary film documenting Stanley Park, the VanDusen Botanical Display Garden, and the visit to Vancouver of the Japanese tall ship the Kaiwo Maru. Footage taken at the VanDusen Garden includes the garden entrance, the administration/library/classroom building, flower beds, roses, trees, ponds, lily pads, blue herons, a starling, and stone sculptures. Footage from Stanley Park includes crowds at the Stanley Park Junction, children and adults riding the Stanley Park Miniature Railway, people watching bears at the Stanley Park Zoo, and other zoo animals including flamingoes and seals. Film also includes footage taken from a sail boat of the Kaiwo Maru in English Bay surrounded by numerous pleasurecraft, with a group of the Kaiwo Maru's crew standing on her bow. The film also includes footage of Vancouver Harbour, downtown Vancouver, and cruise ships at berth as viewed from the deck of a sail boat.

Item is a documentary film documenting Gastown and the VanDusen Botanical Display Garden. Film includes footage taken in Gastown of the Captain John "Gassy Jack" Deighton statue, Hotel Europe, Water Street, the Old Spaghetti Factory, Vancouver Harbour Centre, SS Beaver replica at its moorings, Frisby's Restaurant, Seven Seas Imports, The Coggery, Gaslight Square (131 Water Street), the Gastown Steam Clock. Sawmill fire and Jake Loeppky family

Item is an amateur film documenting family life and a sawmill fire in Vancouver. The film consists of home movie footage filmed by Jake Loeppky, including footage of Queen Elizabeth Park, the Stanley Park Zoo, children playing at the family home in Burnaby, children swimming, and the family entertaining at home. The film also includes footage of a logging camp, a large dam, bears, and people waterskiing. Of particular note is several minutes of footage of the five-alarm fire that destroyed the B.C. Forest Products plant and lumber storage facility at 999 West 6th Avenue on July 3, 1960.

Item is an amateur film documenting Vancouver city lights at night in 1964, including several neon signs and Theatre Row on Granville Street. The film also contains snow scenes and footage of the William Gardner family at Capilano Road in North Vancouver in December 1964 and January 1965, and footage of the family at their West Vancouver home between May and July 1965.

The footage of downtown Vancouver streets taken from a car shows Georgia Street at Thurlow Street, looking east, and Georgia Street heading west from Howe to the Stanley Park Causeway. Footage of downtown streets taken on foot shows Granville Street at Robson Street looking South and the intersection of Granville and Georgia Streets. Landmarks shown include the Marine Building, Hotel Vancouver, Georgia Medical Building, Toronto Dominion Tower, the fountain at the Vancouver Art Gallery, totem poles at Stanley Park, the Lions Gate Bridge and the exterior of the Vancouver Museum. [Vancouver history and Vancouver in the 1930s]

Item is a documentary film documenting a history of Vancouver using historical photographs, maps and records as well as street scenes of Vancouver in the 1930s. The historical portions of the film contain footage about the pioneers of Vancouver including Captain George Vancouver, John Morton (first resident of what was to become the City of Vancouver), Mr. Wm. Evans (engineer on the first transcontinental train into Port Moody), Lord Granville, John Robson, Richard Earl Howe, Admiral, and Sir Harry Burrard Neale. The film also contains footage of a map of First Narrows, Burrard Inlet, English Bay and nearby Government reserves as well as a map of False Creek, the West End and the East End. In addition there is footage of Hastings Mill (1887), Gastown (1887), the heart of the city (1884), the 1886 fire, City Hall after the fire, the CPR (1887), Indian ranches on Lost Lagoon, clearings near Stanley Park, Vancouver in 1888 and 1890, the entrance to Stanley Park (1890), as well as city scenes of Vancouver in the early twentieth century.
