Alaskan Scenery and the Chinese Exhibit at Vancouver's Golden Jubilee

Item is a moving image/film documenting a Chinese performance at Vancouver's Golden Jubilee celebration that includes a theatrical stage show, a trapeze artist, and moving images of the Chinese Arch erected at Pender Street near Carrall Street. There are also images of an unknown beach. This section is preceded by the title frame: Chinese Exhibit Golden Jubilee at Vancouver, B.C.. Film also includes footage taken from a passanger ship moving up the Alaskan coast. The stops are separated by the title frames: Ketchikan, Alaska; Castle Rock; and Peril Straits.

Item is a newsreel film documenting Bing Crosby's visit to Vancouver in 1948. The film contains footage of Bing Crosby at City Hall receiving the Key to the City from Alderman J.D. Cornett; performing at Sunset Community Centre site and turning the sod at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new building; attending a Squamish First Nations ceremony at the Forum where he was made "Chief of Thunder Voice"; and playing golf at the Capilano Golf Club.

Film consists of raw footage shot at Expo 86 and includes footage of RCMP officers interacting with the crowds, views of the Expo grounds from the monorail, crowds, the Roundhouse, the carousel, jugglers and mimes, demonstrations of prototype human-powered flying machines, views of the Expo grounds from the gondolas, the Expo 86 Air Plaza, the Plaza of Nations, people interacting with statues and stationary vehicles, Highway 86 a gray bridge structure with various modes of ground transport vehicles all painted a matching gray colour; people interacting and walking around the vehicles, children playing at the UFO H2O water park, and the Expo grounds. Includes raw footage taken at Expo 86 showing crowds, the Canadian Pavilion, of a wall of television screens, the Hystar Airship flying in the Canadian Pavilion, RCMP musical ride, Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, with other dignitaries, watching the musical ride, close up shots of RCMP officers, and a clown dressed-up like a policeman. Film consists of raw footage shot at Expo 86; shows: pavilions, performers, people watching, the Canada Pavilion, the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre, the Plaza of Nations, neon signs at the Imax theatre, cowgirls dancing, the view from a monorail car, the monorail, and crowds waiting to get on the monorail, inside the Egypt pavilion, people getting splashed riding the Cariboo Log Chute roller coaster, line-ups, crowds, people riding the Parachute Drop ride, and the view from the drop ride. Film consists of raw footage taken at Expo86 and includes scenes of the Minolta Space Drop ride, food carts, crowds, the gondolas and the view from the gondola ride, people walking on the seawall, RCMP officers, the RCMP musical ride (outdoor venue, crowds seated on grass), the floating McDonalds (and the McDonalds Tidy Tug picking up floating garbage), a beer garden, music, pavilion signs, Expo 86 grounds and the outside of several national and provincial pavilions. Item is raw footage shot for a one hour television network documentary featuring Canada's military parachute team, the Sky hawks. Primarily the aerial footage (shot by a fellow sky-diver) captures the sky diving and parachuting performances of the Sky hawks. Some of the aerial footage was shot at Royal Rhodes Military College. Other locations have not been identifed. Additional footage is included that was shot on the ground of a Sky hawks team breifing with Pierre (shot from several angles), and the men getting dressed for a show and checking each others' parachutes and equipment, airplanes taxing, the Sky hawks team practicing thier show on the ground 'dirt dive,' the men chatting near the airplane, and the Sky hawks team entering the airplane. Item is raw footage shot for a one hour television network documentary featuring Canada's military parachute team, the Sky hawks. Includes footage of the Sky Hawks demonstration team, shot from the ground, of the Sky hawks performing sky diving and parachuting tricks, and landing, as well as airplanes flying, and the smoke and flag marking the drop zone. Includes footage shot by a fellow sky diver of men in green camouflage military uniforms parachuting. There are also shots taken using a fish-eye lense of men doing practice parachute jumps from a tower using wires. The fish-eye lense is also used in some sky diving and parachuting shots - the camera is attached to the mid-section of a Sky hawk member rather than to a helmet. Includes some footage of the Sky hawks performing taken by another sky diver, not using a fish-eye lense. Transfered from original camera source tapes 9 and 10A. Silent.

Includes footage of the Canadian Forces Base Moose Jaw, S.K., an interview with Lieutenant-General [Sutherland?] about the Snowbirds team maturing now that they have been around for twenty years, their role and future. Also includes footage taken in Moose Jaw, S.K. of the gathered dignitaries, families, media, and alumni for the final performance of the 1990 Snowbirds team as well as scenes of the show itself and the audience enjoying the demonstration.

The film shows various performances on a stage in the field, and on the track around the field, including a Maori themed dance performance, a circus-like performance of a man and woman being shot out of a cannon, a slapstick comedy, a camel race, a chariot race, and acrobats hanging from a flying helicopter. Each performance act is introduced by a title card.

The documentary begins by following the eight men trying out for the four spaces in the 1990 Snowbirds team, then discussing the history of aviation in Canada and the Canadian military, the majority of the film focuses on the training of the Snowbirds team and the outreach and shows they perform. Ending with the final show of the 20th anniversary season. Digital edited master (no supers). Version has blackout breaks for commercials. Those magnificent snowbirds - The first 20 years

Item is a copy of "Canada's magnificent snowbirds - 20th Anniversary" one hour television network documentary featuring Canada's aerobatic team, the Snowbirds. The documentary begins with an overall set up of a child wanting to grow up to be a Snowbird pilot. The story of the Snowbirds begins with try outs for four new Snowbirds pilots and moves on to the history of aerobatic flight teams in Canada. Using a mix of narration, interviews and historical footage the history of the Snowbirds is laid out and then the narration moves into practice, training and the designing of the new airshow routine for the 1991, 20th Anniversary, season. Leaving the training base in Moose Jaw, S.K. the Snowbirds team travels to Comox, B.C. for an airshow. The documentary continues with an overview of the role of the Snowbirds and their goals on their public relations and air show role. Themes touch on why the Snowbirds have lasted as long as they have and why they will continue on into the future. In addition to shots of crowds and performances two airshow promoters from the USA are interviewed. Back in Moose Jaw at the end of the 1991 season there is a reunion of alumni pilots. The documentary ends with a final performance of the 20th season and a child on a beach inspired to someday be a Snowbird pilot. Narrated by Leslie Neilsen. Cassette version edited from D-2. This is the superless cassette version - no blacks or bumpers.

UBC Sculptures and Totem Poles and the Caledonian Games
