Between the 1940s and 1960s, he owned a grocery storec alled Ah Kai Co. located at Granville and Davie Street. In the 1950s, he also owned a restaurant called The Horseshoe Restaurant located at Renfrew and Hastings Street. His wife was a homemaker and later had to look after the grocery store when Chong passed away.”

Collector/curator’s description reads: “1933, Vancouver. Wedding photo of Willie Fun and Dorothy (nee Quan). Willie was from Quesnel, B.C. Dorothy was the daughter of well-known Vancouver businessman Quan Gow. When the couple married, a newspaper reported that after the wedding the couple came back to Quesnel and found their three-room cottage completely furnished. A story in the Province newspaper (Oct. 2, 1933) noted ‘There were rugs on the floors, the kitchen range in place, and a twelve-tube radio adorned one corner of the living room. In fact, everything needed for housekeeping was supplied and everything was new and chosen with taste. All had been supplied by his Chinese friends.’”

Herbert was born in either Mississippi or Oklahoma and came to Canada as part of the Black migration to Alberta. He worked for a time as porter and served in WWII. He passed away in 1952. Frances was born in Victoria. Her parents were also born in Victoria. She worked for a time as a waitress at Vie's chicken and steak house in Hogan's Alley. Frances died in 1957.”

Bio Leonard Lane: Leonard was a staff person in the BC Association for the Advancement of Coloured People. He was also one of the original members of the Unity Credit Union, which extended loans to members of the Black community. He was the Credit Union's treasurer for 8 of its 9 years. Lenora, the daughter, asked Adeline about her memories of Yucho Chow and the day the photo was taken. Adeline "...doesn't remember that much but she said my dad asked some other Black people in the community where they should go for pictures and Mr. Chow's name came up. They went to his studio to have the photos taken. A good guess would be that his studio was in Chinatown as the community around the AME church was not very far from there. My mom says he was very nice and made them feel comfortable and welcomed. She doesn't remember if he spoke good English but says it must have been pretty good as there was no problem understanding each other. She remembers when they got there he had them remove their coats and said Okay, let's get to it! She remembers someone showing them where and how to stand but whether it was Mr. Chow or someone else she doesn't know.’"

It is the mid-1940s and Louis, who is from New Brunswick, marries the love of his life, Edna. Louis would be best known for his boxing career. In 1950, he turned professional boxer. Sparring in 25 bouts, he won 15 of those matches with a knockout. In 1955, Louis was crowned Canada's middleweight boxing champion. For some reason, after winning that title, he never boxed again. Louis worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway/Via Rail and raised four children with Edna.”

Both were of German descent and originally from Saskatchewan. Peter served in WWII and after being discharged in 1946, he became an accountant. It was while working as a bookkeeper at a cannery camp at Bones Bay, B.C. that he met Frances. They married in the spring of 1948 and continued to work at season canneries around the province for several more years.”
