Baden Baden [Germany - raw footage]

Item is raw camera footage shot for "Return of the Cold Warriors" a half hour television documentary about the history and closing of the last Canadian Military base in Germany. Footage shows jets landing, flying, taxiing and taking off. Footage includes shots of other buildings and air hangars. Also buildings and traffic at night, Footage was transferred from film to video before transfer to the archives; sprocket holes can be seen at times. At times there is a ring of shadow around the outer rim of the frame.

Film is a promotional and informational short produced by New Horizon Films (with support from the NFB) for for the Department of National Defense. The film follows a set of new recruits through officer training at the facility in Chilliwack, B.C.

Primarily the aerial footage (shot by a fellow sky-diver) captures the sky diving and parachuting performances of the Sky hawks. Some of the aerial footage was shot at Royal Rhodes Military College. Other locations have not been identifed. Additional footage is included that was shot on the ground of a Sky hawks team breifing with Pierre (shot from several angles), and the men getting dressed for a show and checking each others' parachutes and equipment, airplanes taxing, the Sky hawks team practicing thier show on the ground 'dirt dive,' the men chatting near the airplane, and the Sky hawks team entering the airplane. Includes footage of the Sky Hawks demonstration team, shot from the ground, of the Sky hawks performing sky diving and parachuting tricks, and landing, as well as airplanes flying, and the smoke and flag marking the drop zone. Includes footage shot by a fellow sky diver of men in green camouflage military uniforms parachuting. There are also shots taken using a fish-eye lense of men doing practice parachute jumps from a tower using wires. The fish-eye lense is also used in some sky diving and parachuting shots - the camera is attached to the mid-section of a Sky hawk member rather than to a helmet. Personal - [Br--?] 1925 - Vancouver 1926 - Prince George - Prince Rupert

Item is an amateur film beginning with footage of a man playing with dogs; wild horses running; Margaret Magoffin driving a car; Sam Magoffin, Margaret and various people and dogs standing on the front stairs of a house; and Sam and three men exiting the S.S. Magoffin & Co. Railway Contractors Tie Department building (possibly in Prince George).

The film also includes footage of Prince Rupert, B.C., including the Prince Rupert Hotel and Sam and Margaret Magoffin on Sixth Avenue with several of the downtown buildings in the background. Also included is footage taken along the waterfront and from aboard the S.S. Prince Rupert, as well as views of the city taken from a high vantage point. Buildings shown in this footage include the fire hall and elevator.

Also contained in the film is footage of a parade in Vancouver taken from a bird’s eye viewpoint. The parade includes footage of mounties on horses, sailors, a pipe band, clowns, animals, and many floats, including floats for Point Grey, the City of Vancouver, the Loyal Order of Moose, Burns Shamrock Brand Products, Vancouver Ice Cream, and a stampede. The film also includes several minutes of footage of a rodeo at Hastings Park, including bronco and bull riding and chuckwagon racing activities. The film also shows Sam and Margaret with other people in front of the Court House and having a picnic on Grouse Mountain. Also included is footage of a military parade by Victory Square, a military review, and a medals ceremony; Mayor L.D. Taylor is shown in attendance at this event.

Poppsie England Wood Family

Item is a film made up of several films that have been spliced together. The film documents the Wood family’s trip to England and contains footage of the steamship journey, the Queen’s Guard parading, a war memorial, St. James’ Park, Buckingham Palace, the Thames, horse races, family scenes, a church, and a wedding. Film also documents locations and events in Vancouver, including the exterior and interior of Wood’s Jewellery Store (Arthur Wood & Co., 2511 Main Street), family gatherings at a house, possibly the Wood family home at 1656 Robson Street, and a troop of cavalry riding in dress uniforms. The stock date years of the film are in the following order: 1926, 1931, 1929, 1931 and 1932.

This documentary outlines the Canadian Airforce experience in Germany during the Cold War from 1953-1993. Individuals are interviewed who served at Baden Baden, the various airplanes flown by Canadians out of the base are discussed and there is footage of the closing down reunion party and the final military parade and fly-over. Footage on this tape was captured inside the plane and alongside the Sky hawks attached to the helmet of a fellow sky diver. For the most part the audio is dominated by wind and aircraft noise.
