Part of Major Matthews collection
Item is a photograph. Notes written on the back include: "Georgia Harris Bridge. Photo: showing concrete Footing on top of piles driven thro: slabs & sawdust. Concrete Footing about 2 1/2 ft. in thickness cast on the top of a group of piles. Piles exposed to the weather and subjected to wet and dry conditions. These piles were afterwards covered up with a ring of concrete around them. This concrete extended down into the sawdust 3 feet and its object no doubt was simply to hide the exposed piles. HMB H.M.
