This film explains how the stock exchange works, gives an overview of the history of the Vancouver Stock Exchange, and follows the Very Hopeful Mining Company. The Very Hopeful Mining Company raises capitol through the Vancouver Stock Exchange and eventually becomes a successful company. Includes black and white archival footage of early Vancouver.

B.C. / Expo 86 - aerials #2

This item consists of raw footage featuring B.C./Expo 86 aerials; shot in 35mm and transferred to one inch tape. Original negative no longer exists and only video footage survives. Some of this material was used in Yaletown Production's video postcard series. There are several shots of the B.C. Pavillion, now the Telus World of Science; including nighttime shots of the B.C. Pavillion, the Expo grounds and the city. Some scenes have been sped up.

City Lights Etc.

Item is an amateur film documenting Vancouver city lights at night in 1964, including several neon signs and Theatre Row on Granville Street. The film also contains snow scenes and footage of the William Gardner family at Capilano Road in North Vancouver in December 1964 and January 1965, and footage of the family at their West Vancouver home between May and July 1965.

Item is an amateur film documenting the 1958 Vancouver Pacific National Exhibition Parade and British Columbia scenery. The film begins with footage probably taken from a Kettle Valley Railroad train going through the Okanagan. The film ends with footage of floats in the P.N.E parade. Identified floats and performers include Shell, White Spot, and the New Westminster Shrine Club General Band. Businesses shown include Oscar's, Standard Stations, British American Oil Company, Canadian Pacific Railroad, and Pacific Western Airlines.

Item is raw camera footage shot for the never completed film which was tentatively titled "Neon Madman" or "Electric City." Includes night street scenes featuring neon lights on Granville Street and Georgia Street, including: Movieland Arcade, Sam's, the Orpheum, Vogue Theatre, Bowmac and more. Also includes scenes of traffic, and shop windows.

Item is a short independent film written and directed by Mike Collier. Photography by Mike Collier and Vic Thomas. Assistance in the making of the film provided by Alpha Cine, Intermedia, and Telesound. Film shows a man sleeping and dreaming of driving nails into various objects or simply smashing them with a hammer. When he wakes up he leaves home with his lunch bucket and then quickly returns for his hammer. Music soundtrack.

Opening of Bloedel Conservatory

Item is a documentary film documenting the opening of the Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park on December 6th, 1969. Film contains bird?s eye view footage of the Bloedel Conservatory, Stanley Park and downtown Vancouver as seen from an airplane. The film also documents the external building structure of the Bloedel Conservatory and people entering it for the opening ceremony. Notable people filmed at the opening ceremony include Mayor Tom Campbell and his wife (who is holding a programme leaflet for the opening), Prentice Bloedel and his wife (who are in front of the sculpture), Deputy Park Superintendent Bill Livingstone (man talking at the microphone and who designed the park), Park Board Chair Andy Livingstone, Vice-Chair Sandy Robertson, Ex-Park Commissioner Grace McCarthy, Park Commissioner George Puil, Park Commissioner George Wainborn, Park Superintendent Stuart Lefeaux and his wife Louise and H.R. PNE Parade - Start of the RCMP Musical Ride

Item is an amateur film documenting the 1958 Vancouver Pacific National Exhibition Parade and British Columbia scenery. The film begins with footage of floats in the P.N.E parade. Identified floats and performers include the train from Montreal to Port Moody 1886, New Westminster, Comox Valley, Sannich, Vancouver Fire Department, Fraser Expedition, Canadian Order of Foresters, The Moonlighters, Horseshoe Bay, and the P.N.E Minstrel Band. Businesses and buildings shown include Standard Stations, British American Oil Company, Canadian Pacific Railroad, Radio CKWX 1130, Hotel Vancouver, Georgia Hotel, the Provincial Courthouse, and Pacific Western Airlines. Footage also shows downtown street banners. The second half of the film includes footage of the RCMP riding onto Hastings Park racetrack in formation in front of an RCMP band being conducted and a crowd. Houses in the Hastings-Sunrise area to the east of Hastings Park are also shown.

Protest

Item is a documentary film documenting a street demonstration in Vancouver in July 1981 protesting the screening of the sexually explicit feature film Caligula in a conventional movie house (not a pornographic establishment). The film includes footage of a crowd of several dozen adults and children carrying placards and picketing the Towne Cinema (919 Granville Street) where Caligula was being shown, a spokesperson for the organization United Citizens for Integrity explaining their reasons for protest, and a number of heated debates on the street between protestors and bystanders/theatre-goers. Film also includes some general views of Granville Street showing the Towne Cinema and nearby buildings.

Stadium

Film is the release print of "Stadium" featuring construction of BC Place Stadium with time lapse of inflating roof. Also contains a panning shot of the city of Vancouver, and shots of construction in progress before the roof was ready to go up, workers working, an aerial view of the building without a roof, the crowd and dignitaries inside awaiting and watching the inflation of the roof. Silent film featuring time lapse footage of the roof of B.C. Place Stadium being inflated; includes views from both inside and outside the building. As well as view shots of the Vancouver skyline with the addition of B.C. Place Stadium and its prominent roof.

Tourism B.C. Marketplace Progam [Program] - Expo 86

Item is "Marketplace Program" produced for EXPO 86 and Tourism BC. Major exhibition in BC Pavilion for EXPO 86. Multi-screen laser disc interactive display. Laser discs were very new at this time and cost over $2500 each to manufacture. This laser disc was produced to be used with specially designed players that would allow for touch-screen interaction from visitors to the B.C. Pavilion. These machines no longer exist; to get an idea of what options were made available pause the playback to view what the touch-screen displays looked like.
Item includes visual vignettes featuring footage to represent various geographical areas of the province of British Columbia. Theme music plays in the background of the scenes; no dialogue. Brief written descriptions of each area of the province precede each section of footage. At 00:10:23 - 00:10:24 screen shots of all of the various touch screen menu screens appear - to see these please slow down the playback and pause for each. Starting at 00:10:26 the footage plays out that would have been associated and parsed out for the various selected menu choices. At 00:12:08-00:12:11 more screen shots of selections flash by, again slow or pause to view these fully. Starting at 00:12:12 more groupings of clips of British Columbia can be viewed. The16mm release print that the digital child was made from, was struck from the internegative/original negatives, and the optical sound track; it is closest thing to an original in the donation for this production. It is the only record of this movie on film with a soundtrack.

Vancouver and Stanley Park

Item is a documentary film documenting Stanley Park, downtown Vancouver, the Vancouver Planetarium, and Vanier Park. The film documents a number of attractions within Stanley Park including the Stanley Park Miniature Railway, Stanley Park Junction, various sections of the seawall, the Brockton Point Lighthouse, Coal Harbour Marina, Elek Imredy's sculpture Girl in a Wetsuit, the replica figurehead of the RMS Empress of Japan, tennis courts, Prospect Point lookout, Lost Lagoon, the Stanley Park Golf Course, totem poles, and the Lions Gate (First Narrows) Bridge (1938-). The film also includes footage of birds including Canada geese, seagulls, swans, mallard and wood ducks, and peacocks. The film documents Vancouver Harbour and its facilities, and includes footage of shipping containers, cranes, cargo ships, seabus, and a floatplane.

Item is a documentary film documenting downtown Vancouver at night and is mostly made up of footage of neon and illuminated electric signs on Granville Street and in Chinatown. The film documents Granville Street at night, with crowds on the sidewalks and many illuminated electric signs visible, including those of the Orpheum, Vogue, and Odeon theatres. Also included is footage of a lighted fountain, the Hudson's Bay Company Building, and traffic signals. The film also documents the neon signs of a numerous restaurants and businesses in Chinatown, including the Marco Polo Restaurant, Ho Ho Chop Suey, the South Seas, Cathay Importers Company Limited, Ho Inn Chop Suey, Ming's, Asia Garden, and Loon Foon Kwok restaurant.

[Vancouver history and Vancouver in the 1930s]

Item is a documentary film documenting a history of Vancouver using historical photographs, maps and records as well as street scenes of Vancouver in the 1930s. The historical portions of the film contain footage about the pioneers of Vancouver including Captain George Vancouver, John Morton (first resident of what was to become the City of Vancouver), Mr. Wm. Evans (engineer on the first transcontinental train into Port Moody), Lord Granville, John Robson, Richard Earl Howe, Admiral, and Sir Harry Burrard Neale. The film also contains footage of a map of First Narrows, Burrard Inlet, English Bay and nearby Government reserves as well as a map of False Creek, the West End and the East End. In addition there is footage of Hastings Mill (1887), Gastown (1887), the heart of the city (1884), the 1886 fire, City Hall after the fire, the CPR (1887), Indian ranches on Lost Lagoon, clearings near Stanley Park, Vancouver in 1888 and 1890, the entrance to Stanley Park (1890), as well as city scenes of Vancouver in the early twentieth century.

Item is an amateur film made in May 1973 documenting Vancouver and West Vancouver. The footage of downtown Vancouver streets taken from a car shows Georgia Street at Thurlow Street, looking east, and Georgia Street heading west from Howe to the Stanley Park Causeway. Footage of downtown streets taken on foot shows Granville Street at Robson Street looking South and the intersection of Granville and Georgia Streets. Landmarks shown include the Marine Building, Hotel Vancouver, Georgia Medical Building, Toronto Dominion Tower, the fountain at the Vancouver Art Gallery, totem poles at Stanley Park, the Lions Gate Bridge and the exterior of the Vancouver Museum. Item is a short independent film filmed, directed and edited by Michael Collier. The three actors are: Dennis MacDonald, Gary Killeen and Dave Ponsart. Film depicts three men who find some insulated wire in the ocean [at wreck beach], drag it into a pile, hitchhike to downtown Vancouver, and then travel around downtown dragging the wire on the sidewalk behind them. Eventually the wire is left to one man who drags it on his own for a while until he leaves it in the car of a man from whom he hitched a ride. Popular music soundtrack.

The short film Nail (~09:00 - 15:29) Written and directed by Mike Collier. Photography by Mike Collier and Vic Thomas. Assistance in the making of the film provided by Alpha Cine, Intermedia, and Telesound. Film shows a man sleeping and dreaming of driving nails into various objects or simply smashing them with a hammer. When he wakes up he leaves home with his lunch bucket and then quickly returns for his hammer. Music soundtrack.
