Gay Games II closing ceremonies

Item is a recording of a segment of the closing ceremonies of Gay Games II, "Triumph," at the Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. In this segment, Gay Games Founder and representative of the Federation of Gay Games' Site Selection Committee, Dr. Tom Waddell, announces that Gay Games III (1990) has been awarded to Vancouver, British Columbia, and Richard Dopson makes remarks of welcome and thanks.

Item is a recording of a documentary of Celebration '90: Gay Games III and Cultural Festival in Vancouver (B.C.). The recording opens with the opening ceremonies of Celebration '90 in B.C. Place stadium on August 4th, 1990, including the parade of athletes; remarks from Master of Ceremonies Robin Tyler, Member of Parliament and honorary board member Svend Robinson; Metropolitan Vancouver Athletic & Arts Association (MVAAA) board member and Celebration '90 Director Richard Dopson, and MVAAA board member Betty Baxter. Following is an interview with Celebration '90 Office Manager Mary Brookes with shots of the registration process and volunteers in action as participants arrive at the airport, followed by footage of a men and womens' triathalon in English Bay/West End, the awarding of medals, and a game of water polo. The documentary then continues with remarks about Celebration '90 and gay pride from MP Svend Robinson, Sports Co-chair Mark Wilson, Mike Mealiffe, author Jane Rule, Betty Baxter, Celebration '90 Executive Director Mark Mees, Richard Dopson, and Team Auckland, as well as footage of Celebration '90 Gay Games III and Cultural Festival events: "Dancelebration" (at the Commodore Ballroom), men's wrestling, women's weightlifting, women's swimming, women's and men's volleyball, men's soccer, costumed swimming relays, the festival chorus (performing at the Plaza of Nations), Swing '90 (the San Francisco City Swing Band and Tap Troupe at the Commodore Ballroom), a dance party, ice hockey, and men's and women's physique competitions. The documentary ends with the closing ceremonies of Celebration '90 in B.C. Place stadium on August 11th, 1990, including remarks from Federation of Gay Games Co-President Rick Peterson and announcement of Gay Games IV being awarded to New York (N.Y.), followed by words from Manager of Volunteer Services Heather Williams and a montage of Gay Games III Celebration '90 events.

Item part is part 1 (of 4) of a compilation of clips about Celebration '90 and live footage captured by David L. E. Miles during the opening and closing ceremonies of Celebration '90 in Vancouver (B.C.). The program opens with clips of CBC, CTV, and other news reports which touch on the backlash of Christian fundamentalists, their opposition to Gay Games III being held in Vancouver, and a controversial ad ran by a fundamentalist pastor in the Vancouver Sun; the news clips also contain comments from Celebration '90 Director Richard Dopson and Alderman Gordon Price. The recording then continues with live footage of fireworks, presumably those of the opening ceremonies of Celebration '90, followed by live footage of the opening ceremonies in B.C. Place stadium, including performances by Lesbian and Gay Bands of America, a welcome from committee chairs, staff, and the Board of Directors; the rainbow flag flown by Brent Nicholson Earle, and the parade of athetes.

Place stadium, continuing the parade of athletes from where part 1 ended, followed by the singing of the national anthem by the Vancouver Chorus; remarks from Master of Ceremonies Robin Tyler and political and sports representatives. Also included are performances by the Vancouver Chorus and Celebration '90 Festival Chorus, followed with the lighting of the torch to officially open the Games and Cultural Festival. Part 2 ends with a clip of a news report covering the events and speakers opening of the Games, as well as those protesting outside B.C. Place stadium.

Place stadium on August 11th, 1990. The program then continues with live footage of the closing ceremony proceedings, including remarks from MP Kim Campbell, performances by the Lesbian and Gay Bands of America and the Bay Area Raw Rahs cheerleaders, the parade of champions, remarks by Master of Ceremonies Robin Tyler, performances by the Celebration '90 Festival Chorus of "Esperanto" and "Never Turning Back," and presentation of the Tom Waddell Cup.

The recording closes with live footage of the crowds departing from B.C. Place stadium after the closing ceremonies, followed by clips of news reports on the closing of Celebration '90, including comments fron Celebration '90 Director Richard Dopson.

Sing Out : the hidden legacies concert

Hidden Legacies was a performance focusing on the topic of HIV/AIDS, the program shows clips of the performance and rehearsals. Make Magic 2001

Item is a videocassette showing edited footage recorded at Make Magic, the 18th Annual IAGSDC [International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs] Convention at the Westin Bayshore Hotel and Resort, Vancouver from April 12 to 15, 2001. The video begins with an intro showing Vancouver nature and cityscapes, and general conference scenes with music by the Vancouver Men's Chorus. The intro is followed by a list of all participating clubs and callers and then a speech by Bill Monroe. The next portion of the video is a dance by Squares Across the Borders to "Heroes are Just the Same" called by Anne Uebelacker. The footage continues to show scenes from the conference including square dancing at the hotel with callers Todd Fellegy, Steve Edlund, Tom Miller, Ray Brendzy, and Anne Uebelacker; HTQ 2001 hosted by Ucanleime Amy and Virginia Hamm; banquet highlights featuring Bill Monroe and Miss Betsy Gotta receiving the Golden Boot Award; and the Magical Mystery Tour (escorted by the Vancouver City Police Motorcycle Drill team) dancing at Ceperly Park, Vanier Park, Spanish Banks, Queen Elizabeth Park and Library Square; and concluding with scenes from the closing ceremonies.

The Names Project

The film discuses the impact of The Names Project, which resulted in the creation of a large scale quilt with the names of people lost to the AIDS epidemic. The film includes footage of Cleve Jones (Executive Director of The NAMES Project) and Mike Smith (General Manager of The NAMES Project) and shots of the quilt on tour in various cities in the United States.

Item is a videocassette containing a documentary entitled 'Faces: GLBT in Vancouver.' The documentary traces the history of LGBTQ life in Vancouver and shows demonstrations, businesses, legal frameworks, community leaders, night life, AIDS/HIV, activism, neighbourhoods and celebrations. The video contains interviews and archival footage of Bill Richardson, Margo Dunn, Ellen Woodsworth, Esther Phillips, Jamie Lee Hamilton, Rob Joyce, Don Hann, Maurice Flood, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Sarah Davidson, Mary-Woo Sims, Heather Kitching, Jim Deva, Svend Robinson, Tim Stevenson, Ted Northe, Gordon Price, Janine Fuller, Gareth Kirby, Angus Praught, Dennis Dahl, Garry Penny, Jane Rule, Nym Hughes, Libby Davies. The archival footage in the film was provided by the CBC. The documentary was produced, directed and edited by Thomas Donovan.

Towards the Dr. Peter Centre

The documentary includes footage of Dr. John Blatherwick, Dr. Michael O'Shaughnessy, Dr. Peter Young, Dr. Jay Wortman, Andrew Johnson, Dr. Alastair McLeod, Ronald Mulchey, Bonnie Gabel, Marcie Summers, Lauro de Haan, Howard Engel and Brian Knowles. Item is a videocassette containing the documentary entitled "Little Sister's vs/ Big Brother", written and directed by Aerlyn Weissman. The film explores the history and mandate of Little Sister's Bookstore and traces the legal battle and court case against the Canada Border Services Agency. The court case centered around censorship, the labelling of books as 'obscene' by Customs Canada and the denial of their entry into Canada. The film includes footage of and interviews with Jim Deva.
