Series consists of records created by several divisions of the Park Board and maintained by the Board's central registry. Series contains various committee records, including minutes; administrative and financial records; files relating to specific parks (Operational location files series); and subject files pertaining to property acquisition and development, recreational facilities, beaches and marinas, and sports and other recreational programs. Arranged into four subseries: Housekeeping subject files, Operational location files, Operational subject files and Reports to the Board of Parks and Recreation files.

Series consists of correspondence regarding the operation and maintenance of a variety of recreation facilities. Two methods of arrangement are evident: alphabetically by file title; and chronologically. A block numeric system - which corresponds to an alphabetic arrangement - was applied to 1975 and 1976.

City parks : plans and development register

Series consists of a register containing the following information on over 100 Vancouver parks: street location, legal description, existence of playground apparatus and field games. A small ink on vellum plan of each park is also included. The parks are listed in alphabetical order.
Note: Stanley Park is not included in the Register.

Some of the recreational activities documented in the film include children?s playground activities, a parade, races, baseball, tug-of-war, swimming, gymnastics, ice-skating, hockey and a toboggan run.

[Chicago and Minneapolis parks and playgrounds]

Item is a documentary film documenting parks and playgrounds in Chicago and Minneapolis in the United States of America. The film is shot in the winter and contains footage of parks and mostly vacant recreation playgrounds and playground equipment such as a miniature train and horse and carriage. The film also documents people engaged in recreational activities at an ice rink, animals and children in a playground as well as several identifiable locations including the Alder Planetarium (Chicago), the Keith R. Olsen Memorial Recreation Centre, the Stuart Field Minneapolis Park Board building, and Barnum Park. This film may have been used by the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation for reference purposes.

Item is a documentary film documenting The Morning Show's coverage of visits to Vancouver parks with interviewer Ross Mortimer and host Doug Campbell. This film is the continuation of film MI-116 'Morning Show' - Stanley Park and Queen Elizabeth Park Part #1. The program was aired on CBUT (Channel 2) in 1963 and contains footage of Ross Mortimer's interviews with the Chairman of the Parks Board who discusses Stanley Park and Queen Elizabeth Park. This film also contains footage of Nelson Park and Ross Mortimer's interviews with seniors and children in the park about the uses and functions of parks. The film concludes with comments from Stuart Lefeaux, Superintendent of Parks and Grace McCarthy, Parks Board Commissioner.

Item is a documentary film documenting The Morning Show's coverage of visits to Stanley Park and Queen Elizabeth Park with interviewer Ross Mortimer and host Doug Campbell. The program was aired on CBUT (Channel 2) in 1963 and contains footage of Ross Mortimer's interview in Stanley Park with Stuart Lefeaux, Superintendent of Parks in greater Vancouver. Lefeaux discusses various aspects of the interaction between parks, the Parks Board and the public as well as Parks Board personnel, Stanley Park history, recreational activities, and services offered to the public such as supervised playgrounds and refreshment services. In addition, the film documents a visit to Queen Elizabeth Park including footage of Century Rock, which is a time capsule located there that is to be opened in 2054. During the visit, Ross Mortimer interviews Grace McCarthy, Parks Board Commissioner, about the park's history, current uses and future visions and planning. The film also documents Ross Mortimer's interview with the park's landscape designer who discusses garden design as well as various types of trees and flowers in the park.

This film is the continuation of film MI-114 'Morning Show' - Kerrisdale Community Centre Part #1. The program was aired on CBUT (Channel 2) in 1963 and contains footage of the recreational activities that take place at the Kerrisdale Community Centre as well as interviews with the centre's instructors, users, and administrators. The film documents Ross Mortimer's interview with Marshal Smith, Director of Supervised Recreation, who discusses the connection between community centres and the Parks Board. In addition, the film documents a variety of the centre's recreational activities as Ross Mortimer interviews the instructors and participants of various programmes including children's Judo, floor hockey, gymnastics, Christmas craft making, painting and women's Christmas arts and crafts.

Item is a documentary film documenting The Morning Show's coverage of the Kerrisdale Community Centre with interviewer Ross Mortimer and host Doug Campbell. The program was aired on CBUT (Channel 2) in 1963 and contains footage of the recreational activities that take place at the Kerrisdale Community Centre as well as interviews with the centre's instructors, users, and administrators. The film documents Ross Mortimer's interviews with Mrs. Joan R. Grey, who is an employee of the Parks Board and is responsible for the centre's programmes, and Mr. Hal Milton, who is the President of the Kerridale Community Centre. In this interview, Milton and Grey discuss how the centre is jointly operated with the Parks Board as well as other topics including fundraising, volunteers, and the role of women in the centre. In addition, the film documents a variety of the centre's recreational activities as Ross Mortimer interviews the instructors and participants of various programmes including a children's exercise class, a senior citizens carpet bowling group, an adults clay sculpting and pottery class, a women's art class, a women's French class, and a children's Judo class. There is also footage of an interview with Francis Bodey, who is the secretary of the Kerrisdale Community Centre.

On the spot zoo story

Item is a documentary film documenting the Stanley Park Zoo. The film contains footage of various animals at the zoo including Nanook the polar bear, penguins, Oscar the baby seal living with the penguins, seals, sea lions, monkeys, peacocks, pigeons, flamingos, and ducks. The footage of the animals is narrated by Fred Davis. Davis also interviews the curator of the zoo, Alan Best, who talks about his career, his Labrador retriever, and the challenges of diet and climate change for some of the animals at the zoo.

Playground films -- special events

Item is a documentary film documenting various recreational activities and special events taking place in park playgrounds in Vancouver. The film contains footage of special events such as the 1967 Sandbox Project, the Annual Kids Fishing Derby, and the Soap-box Derby. The recreational activities documented include baseball, children?s fishing, Ukrainian dancing, outdoor ballet dancing, boxing, bicycle riding, basketball, volleyball, outdoor gymnastics, children?s games, and musical performances. The film also documents a children?s parade involving children carrying signs with various Vancouver park names, a children?s puppet show, a parade with children marching their bicycles and a marching bag-piping band as well as a children?s trophy ceremony. In addition, the film contains footage of children driving mini cars at the Playground Traffic School as well as footage of Camp Capilano and children participating in recreational activities such as hiking, eating lunch and tug of war.

Item is a documentary film documenting Queen Elizabeth's 1959 visit to Vancouver. The film shows preparation of a presentation for her visit to Queen Elizabeth Park as well as the presentation being viewed by Queen Elizabeth. The presentation consists of an assembly of children creating a dogwood-flower-shaped formation in the park.

Playground feature

Item is a documentary film documenting John Lawson Park in West Vancouver. The film contains footage of the proposed playscape model for the playground as well as footage of the completed playground with children playing on it. The film also documents an interview between two unidentified men at the playground.

Handicapped summer playground program

Item is a documentary film documenting the Handicapped Summer Playground Program of 1963. Film contains footage of the B.C. Society for Crippled Children?s bus which transports the children to the park as well as footage of the children participating in activities such as playing games and eating lunch.

Stanley Park railway

Item is a documentary film documenting the Stanley Park Miniature Railway and other recreational activities in the park. The b&w footage of this film documents the construction of the miniature railway including bulldozing of the land and building of the railway tracks. It also contains footage of a ceremony involving hammering in the last spike as well as footage of the train running along the tracks in full operation carrying passengers and arriving at a station filled with crowds of people waiting to take a ride. The colour footage of this film documents other recreational activities in the park such as people doing arts and crafts, archery, and the 19th Annual Sandbox Contest. Collingwood Park is also documented in the film with footage of children participating in a tug of war and high jump. There is also footage of an unidentified ceremony involving a musical band, flag raising and balloon releasing.

Opening of Bloedel Conservatory

Item is a documentary film documenting the opening of the Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park on December 6th, 1969. Film contains bird?s eye view footage of the Bloedel Conservatory, Stanley Park and downtown Vancouver as seen from an airplane. The film also documents the external building structure of the Bloedel Conservatory and people entering it for the opening ceremony.
