  • 1878-1886

The collection consists of two scrapbooks entitled "Mark Twain's Adhesive Scrap Book" patented 1873. Both volumes consist of newspaper cuttings from the Victoria newspapers. They are mainly concerned with political disputes and actions relating to land, finance, railways and labour. Many "Letters to the Editor" are included, also long passages quoting speeches from meetings in the House (B.C.) and other places. It is as if Robert Beaven, the collector of these clippings, were keeping a close watch on what the politicians of his day were thinking and doing, also the public as revealed by Letters to the Editor. Some of the matters discussed include The Chinese (in U.S.A., B.C. and Australia), School Costs (not Vancouver), Burrard Inlet and Queen of Vancouver Island.
