Caption on back of postcard: "Although the Vancouver Fire Department was formed early in 1886, ordered equipment did not arrive in time to deal with the great fire that started on June 13. From 1888, when the first horses were purchased, the engines were no longer drawn by men, and in 1889 a paid Fire Department was formed with 'call men', who were paid $15.00 per month."
