The City of Vancouver Archives documentary art collection consists of visual art works relating to the social, political, cultural and artistic history of Vancouver. Items in the collection include original works of art (acrylic, oil, and watercolor paintings; drawings; cartoons; and illuminations), original prints, and sculptures.

The works in the City of Vancouver Archives documentary art collection are differentiated from other categories of art by their emphasis on factual, objective representation rather than conceptual or interpretive representation. Each item in the collection represents a notable person, site, or event.

Also included are scrapbooks, audio tapes of annual meetings, and photographs. The fonds also includes records of Royal Dairies Limited (originally Young Hoy Limited). Photographs in the fonds depict the construction of the Burnaby plant (1962-1963) and various photographs pertaining to the Association and the Fraser Valley in general. Fonds consists of the 160 page typescript biography of Dadye Winkelmans, entitled "Dadye's Dance". The biography contains excerpts from Dadye's diary, which document her experiences while performing on tour in Europe and the U.S. It also documents the Vancouver area dance scene during the 1940's and 1950's when Dadye received her initial training in ballet and other various dance forms during her childhood.

The textual records present a richly detailed account of the development and evolution of the Children's Hospital over the course of fifty years. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has been a broadcaster and promoter of music for many years. C.B.C. Vancouver Orchestra was formed in 1938. Its directors have included Ira Dilworth, the founder, John Eliot Gardiner, Mario Bernardi and John Avison, conductor.

The City of Vancouver Archives library collection is meant to complement our archival holdings. The collection's primary purpose is to support research at the Archives by staff and patrons. It contains books on British Columbia history especially those that focus on the history of the Greater Vancouver area and the people who live and work there. Special topics in the collection include books on forestry and fishing and other books that explore the economic history of the City of Vancouver. The collection also includes current Archival practical and academic resources as well as more than five hundred monographs collected and annotated by the first City Archivist, Major James Skitt Matthews.

The fonds contains four volumes of minutes of the Dominion Day Celebration Committee, 1890-1900; included with the minutes are financial statements, reports of the sub-committees, and programme discussions. Relevant clippings are also attached throughout the volumes. The fonds also includes invitations (1887, 1888), programmes (1887-1904), a statement of account held with the Empire Wine Company (1887), and a bank book (1904).

The scrapbook contains material relating to A.M. Stephen's literary, political and social activities, 1928-1942. Included are newspaper clippings of reviews of his books and recital tours, from Vancouver to Halifax. There are brochures advertising his works, copies of "Lords of the Air", and three published essays. Christmas cards from his friends as well as A.M. Stephen's own cards are in the scrapbook. There are pamphlets on the Spanish civil war, one by Dr. Norman Bethune, pamphlets and photographs on the war between China and Japan in the 1930s, and pamphlets on fascism in general. A.M. Stephen wrote a pamphlet on the war in China (1939). A report on The Pacific Northwest Embargo Conference held in Vancouver in April 1939 is included. There is a copy of a photograph of The Child Welfare Association of B.C., 1919-1920, showing Stephen as first vice-president. The proceedings of the second annual conference of The Child Welfare Association held in October 1919 are also included. There is a complete copy of an issue of "The Western Tribune", dated 19 October 1929. Material is arranged chronologically in the scrapbook with loose items in an accompanying box.

The fonds includes records of the British Columbia Society of Fine Arts, including a minute book, 1917-1941, a list of visitors to the 1925 exhibition, business correspondence, 1939-1949, general correspondence, 1930-1949, and programmes of exhibitions, 1929-1967; the fonds also includes records of the British Columbia Society of Artists, including three minute books, 1947-1967, lists of exhibitors, 1919-1930, membership lists and expense accounts, 1955-1967, records of membership dues, 1957-1960, and correspondence, 1950-1967. There are also several histories of the society, clippings, letters and official notices of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and registration lists of attendance at art shows and public lectures.
