The City of Vancouver Archives documentary art collection consists of visual art works relating to the social, political, cultural and artistic history of Vancouver. Items in the collection include original works of art (acrylic, oil, and watercolor paintings; drawings; cartoons; and illuminations), original prints, and sculptures.

The works in the City of Vancouver Archives documentary art collection are differentiated from other categories of art by their emphasis on factual, objective representation rather than conceptual or interpretive representation. Each item in the collection represents a notable person, site, or event.

Collection consists of published items issued by the City of Vancouver, including items issued by its other agencies and predecessors - i.e., the Municipality of Point Grey, the Municipality of South Vancouver, the Park Board, the Vancouver Police Department, the Vancouver Public Library, and the Vancouver School Board. The collection also includes items published by external bodies where the City contributed content, or the publication was commissioned by the City.

The collection consists of two copies of "Romance of Vancouver" published in 1936 by the Native Sons of B.C., a typescript copy of "Memories of the Past" by Reuben Hamilton, and a handwritten copy of "My Recollections of Early Vancouver" by Gertrude Gow 1968, copied in 1971 by H.W. Parr.

The collection consists of two photocopies of Aileen Campbell's articles and a typescript of her notes during one of the interviews.

The fonds consists of records created and received by Jack Boothe in relation to his career as a cartoonist. Records include correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, cartoons, cartoon scrap books, published books on cartoons and other materials.

Fonds consists of the 160 page typescript biography of Dadye Winkelmans, entitled "Dadye's Dance". The biography contains excerpts from Dadye's diary, which document her experiences while performing on tour in Europe and the U.S. It also documents the Vancouver area dance scene during the 1940's and 1950's when Dadye received her initial training in ballet and other various dance forms during her childhood.

The textual records present a richly detailed account of the development and evolution of the Children's Hospital over the course of fifty years. The records reflect the daily operations and long range plans of the hospital through reports and the minutes from meetings by the Board of Directors, the standing committees (Executive, Finance, Hospital, Clinic, Building, etc.), the Hospital Administrator, and Medical Staff. A substantial group of photographs is physically maintained in CVA 754. The fonds consists of records both generated and acquired by Bice Caple. Included are personal correspondence and ephemera; records, general information and production programs of the Dominion Drama Festival, Playhouse Theatre Centre, Canadian Conference of the Arts, Vancouver International Festival and the Vancouver Children's Theatre; photographs of various performance casts; and clippings relating to reviews of productions in which Bice Caple acted. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has been a broadcaster and promoter of music for many years. C.B.C. Vancouver Orchestra was formed in 1938. Its directors have included Ira Dilworth, the founder, John Eliot Gardiner, Mario Bernardi and John Avison, conductor.

The fonds consists of papers, publications and photographs relating to various topics: the Vancouver Junior Board of Trade, the Rowell-Sirois Report, provincial-municipal relations, Vancouver City Planning Commission, discrimination and Vivian Engine Works Ltd.

The collection includes maps, charts, architectural drawings and technical drawings collected by the Archives.

The City of Vancouver Archives library collection is meant to complement our archival holdings. The collection's primary purpose is to support research at the Archives by staff and patrons. It contains books on British Columbia history especially those that focus on the history of the Greater Vancouver area and the people who live and work there. Special topics in the collection include books on forestry and fishing and other books that explore the economic history of the City of Vancouver. The collection also includes current Archival practical and academic resources as well as more than five hundred monographs collected and annotated by the first City Archivist, Major James Skitt Matthews.

The records reflect Mrs. MacKechnie's involvement in saving the entrance to Stanley Park from encroachment by proposed development and in the revitalization of Gastown. Included are minutes, reports, briefs, news clippings, correspondence, financial documents, submissions to City Council, maps, plans, drawings, research notes, photographs, flyers, etc.

Document types include immigration and naturalization documents, citizenship papers, one Italian passport, marriage certificates, and correspondence relating to company service and retirement benefits. The fonds consists of miscellaneous personal papers, 1884 1928, including notes concerning his daily activities 1888-1909, together with several printed bills and letters relating to banking and currency reform in the Province of Canada, 1841-1849.

The fonds contains four volumes of minutes of the Dominion Day Celebration Committee, 1890-1900; included with the minutes are financial statements, reports of the sub-committees, and programme discussions. Relevant clippings are also attached throughout the volumes. The fonds also includes invitations (1887, 1888), programmes (1887-1904), a statement of account held with the Empire Wine Company (1887), and a bank book (1904).

The scrapbook contains material relating to A.M. Stephen's literary, political and social activities, 1928-1942. Included are newspaper clippings of reviews of his books and recital tours, from Vancouver to Halifax. There are brochures advertising his works, copies of "Lords of the Air", and three published essays. Christmas cards from his friends as well as A.M. Stephen's own cards are in the scrapbook. There are pamphlets on the Spanish civil war, one by Dr. Norman Bethune, pamphlets and photographs on the war between China and Japan in the 1930s, and pamphlets on fascism in general. A.M. Stephen wrote a pamphlet on the war in China (1939). A report on The Pacific Northwest Embargo Conference held in Vancouver in April 1939 is included. There is a copy of a photograph of The Child Welfare Association of B.C., 1919-1920, showing Stephen as first vice-president. The proceedings of the second annual conference of The Child Welfare Association held in October 1919 are also included. There is a complete copy of an issue of "The Western Tribune", dated 19 October 1929. Material is arranged chronologically in the scrapbook with loose items in an accompanying box.

The collection consists of articles A.D. Darlington published between 1913-1938 which have been collected into a scrapbook by his son, John Darlington, photographs and correspondence.

Collection consists of copies of the programs issued for the 85th Convention of the I.T.U., held at Vancouver 16-23 August 1941, the proceedings of the meeting of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the I.T.U., held at Vancouver 18-23 August 1941, and an outline history of Union No. 226 by Mr. George Bartley. The collection also contains copies of "Typo Times", a weekly news sheet issued by the Union during the Vancouver Province strike of 1946-1948. In addition, there are broadsheets issued at the time of the 1946-1948 strike and the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Union, as well as invitation cards issued on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the I.T.U. No. 226.

The fonds consists of photographs; the correspondence of Reverend W. Lashley Hall, F.W. Haggman and Catherine Hodgson; Hodgson's poetry; and miscellaneous pamphlets related to church activities and other matters.

The third volume is an "International Official Souvenir, Tenth Biennial Convention, Brotherhood Railway Carmen of America", 1907.
