Topical files

Series consists of a collection of articles, photographs, films newsclippings and other materials relating to various individuals, places, local business and subjects, which are connected with the history of Kerrisdale area. These files were collected not only to fulfill the Society’s mandate of preserving history of Kerrisdale, but also to prepare for the Society’s project of publishing a history book of Kerrisdale.

The fonds consists of administrative records, project files, correspondence, minutes and reports documenting the operation of the Society. The fonds also contains historical photographs, topical reference files, films and oral history tapes which were collected by the Society to preserve historical information of Kerrisdale community.

The fonds is arranged into the following series: Herbert Elwyn Addington Photographs (1949-1981), Administrative files (ca. 1983-2005), and Topical files (ca. 1900-1995).

Family letter files

Series consists of family correspondence and other records arranged chronologically into files by Ted Taylor. Records creators are Annie Louise Taylor, L.D. Taylor, Osborne J. Pierce, Caroline Little Pierce, Winifred Mabel Pierce, Theodore Pierce Taylor and Kenneth Osborn Taylor. Series includes incoming and outgoing correspondence of L.D. Taylor, relating to his marriage to Annie, his legal troubles in Chicago, his life in Vancouver, B.C., his ownership of the World newspaper and his activities as Mayor. Letters from Annie Taylor to her family between 1899 and 1906 document the Taylors' activities in Vancouver, and Annie s impressions of the city. Correspondence also includes letters from L.D.'s sister Kate Cooley to Annie Louise and Theodore Taylor. In addition to correspondence, the files in this series contain photographs, financial records, including receipts, invoices, cheque books and accounting records, journals and notebooks of Osborne J. Pierce and Winifred Mabel Pierce, legal documents, certificates, drawings, written prose and poetry, notes, pamphlets, programs, ephemera, postcards, newspaper and journal clippings, report cards, school assignments, business cards, invitations and membership cards.

1862-65 Civil War

File consists of Osborne J. Pierce's certificates of appointment to Corporal in Company G of the 24th Regiment of Maine Militia, September 10, 1862, and to Sergeant Major of the 24th Regiment of Maine Volunteers, April 13, 1863, as well as an outline of his Civil War Service, an autobiographical prose piece titled "Twenty Five Years Ago! By a Veteran Soldier," and a poem titled "A Soldiers Return," all authored by Pierce.

Item is a photostatic copy of a manuscript map showing trails and routes of communication in a portion of British Columbia from the Canada-U.S. border in the south to Seaton Lake in the north, and from the coast to Vermillion in the east. The section of coastline extends from Semiahmoo Bay in the south to Point Atkinson in the north. Map shows the location of mule trails and wagon roads, and includes a trail in progress from New Westminster to Burrard Inlet (North Road), trails from Whatcom to Hope and Semiahmoo to Derby, the Hudsons Bay Brigade Trail, Douglas Road, a trail proposed by Colonel Moody from New Westminster to Fort Hope, and the Dewdney Trail. Included with the map is a 1949 letter from Major Matthews, City Archivist, to J.M. Pearce in which Matthews describes the map, and a 1952 enquiry from L.B. [Housler] for a map showing the Dewdney Trail.

Item is a modern photocopy of a map showing the southwest portion of British Columbia and the northwest part of Washington State. The map depicts settlements, geographical features, wagon roads, bridle paths and other man-made features. Prepared under the direction of Capt. Persona, R.E. by order of Col. R.C. Moody, R.E.

Thomas Townley fonds

The fonds consists of miscellaneous crown grants, conveyances and deeds relating to various lots on or near Burrard Inlet in Group One, New Westminster District. There are also papers touching on court cases and claims, political organizations, business ventures and investments, and copies of deeds, conveyances, mortgages, and miscellaneous real estate correspondence, municipal, provincial and federal. Also included is a photograph album presented to Townley by his fellow officers in 1897, and Townley's Governor General's Medal for mathematics and physical science, 1881, Trinity College.

The scrapbook contains chiefly newspaper clippings on poetry, Chester B. Macneill, a prominent Vancouver lawyer, and on Vancouver's social circle in the 1940s. There are miscellaneous letters and notes relating to poetry and C.B. Macneill.

File includes a United States patent granted to Osborne J. Pierce in 1871 for an Improvement in Roofings, an alphabetical index book with citations to articles of interest and notes on construction and architecture, and an excerpt of autobiographical prose by Pierce.

Southcott family fonds

The fonds consists of family photographs; correspondence relating to the death of Private Charles Caldwell (nephew of Annie Southcott); legal papers relating to J.J. Southcott's apprenticeship in 1863; J.J. Southcott's Masonic certificate; miscellaneous pamphlets; and two prints and one painting.
