Ray Michal fonds

Fonds documents the professional career of Ray Michal, predominantly his role as managing director of the City Stage Theatre Centre.

The fonds contains records documenting the administration and operations of City Stage, including choosing and developing projects, managing the theatre's facilities, obtaining grant funding from public and private bodies, promoting productions, liaison with the press and other production companies, and production of plays. The fonds also includes records which document Michal's career before and after City Stage, some of which are inter-filed with City Stage records.

The fonds includes a wide variety of business records, such as leases, correspondence, and financial reports; production records such as annotated copies of scripts, prop lists, stage layout designs, and cast photographs; and promotional records, such as press releases and press clippings.

Where it is possible to clearly identify City Stage business and production records, these have been arranged into their own series, seperate from Michal's non-City Stage records.

The collection consists of a letter dated 2 October 1794, which was written by Vancouver while on board the "Discovery" in Nootka Sound. It was addressed to the father of a midshipman in the crew. The letter deals with business matters, but Vancouver also notes that they were unable to find any northwest passage and therefore they had no reason to remain in the area.

The collection consists of a manuscript containing a history of the McNair-Fraser Lumber Company, Vancouver, by David M. Rees-Thomas. In 1906, the McNair Timber Company was incorporated in Vancouver. The timber limits were located in what is now the British Properties of West Vancouver. In 1907, a logging railway was begun by the company and during the same year a partnership was entered into with Russell L. Fraser and the new corporation was known as the McNair-Fraser Lumber Company Ltd. By 1918, the company was out of existence. Robert McNair continued to work in the industry as president of Robert McNair Shingle Company Ltd.

The Izen family moved to Vancouver in 1888 and after great struggles opened a fruit store on Canada Street. Etta Izen married Maurice Koenigsberg. There are several descendants living in the Vancouver area.

The records were acquired and created by Richard Dopson through his work with the Metropolitan Vancouver Athletics and Arts Association, the Vancouver Gay Volleyball Association, the Federation of Gay Games, and Team Vancouver, and document the administration and operations of these associations.

The fonds includes a variety of types of textual records, photographs, posters, and sound and moving image recordings.

The fonds consists of fifteen sketchbooks containing courtroom illustrations done by Jane Wolsak. The sketches depict participants in civil and criminal proceedings in both provincial and federal courts held in the greater Vancouver region between 1998 and 2010. Some of the sketches were licensed to newspapers and television news broadcasters for inclusion in their reporting.
Wolsak covered many high profile trials during this period, including the trials of Kelly Ellard and Warren Glowatski for the murder of Reena Kirk; Ajaib Singh Bagri, Ripudaman Singh Malik and Inderjit Singh Reyat for the Air India bombings; and Robert ‘Willie’ Picton for the murders of twenty-seven women. Complete listings of the covered trials are included in the respective descriptions for the individual sketchbooks.
