Victoria - arborist, waterfront, roses

Item is an amateur film from Douglas Scott's time living in Victoria, British Columbia, which captures an arbourist climbing a tree with ropes and spiked boots, hacking branches with an axe, and stopping for a cigarette break at the top of the tree; a shot of a large steam boat seen through the porte cochere of the Empress Hotel (Victoria, BC); and close-up shots of roses, most likely taken at either the Empress Hotel or Beacon Hill Park.

Vancouver, BC

Item is a documentary film documenting bridges, Vancouver Harbour, the Stanley Park (B.C.) seawall, and maritime traffic around Vancouver. The film includes footage of False Creek, the Granville (Street) Bridge (3rd, 1954-), the Burrard Bridge (1932-), the Lions Gate (First Narrows) Bridge (1938-), the Second Narrows Highway Bridge (1960-), the Stanley Park seawall and sculptures including Elek Imredy's sculpture Girl In A Wetsuit and the replica figurehead of the RMS Empress of Japan, the shipping facilities at Vancouver Harbour, and the seabus terminal. The film also includes footage of boats and ships including a sailboat, tugboat, cruise ship, seabus, ferry, and cargo ships.

Seaton Street

Item is a photograph on an album page, annotated with "An example of conditions often met with. On the left (North side of street) the sidewalk is on the inside, with outer boulevard; on the right the sidewalk is constructed to the kerb, with inner boulevard. Proper boulevarding under such conditions is impossible. Note the forest maples planted closely together on the left and the occasional tree on the opposite side. An application is on file requesting the City to remove these trees entirely, so as to permit light and air to the houses and to make more effective street lighting at night."

Denman Street (between Nelson and Comox)

Item is a photograph on an album page, annotated with "In this block the heavy type of forest maple was planted on the inner boulevard. This is a typical instance of how the owners of the houses affected by such trees deal with them in their desire for light and air. NOTE: That in the next block is outer planting."
