Here's The Score For '64

Item is a film containing home movie sequences separated by title cards. The film shows footage of horses on a farm in Abbotsford, zebras and horses on a farm in Richmond, people drinking, laughing and dancing in a wood paneled living room in Abbotsford, the view from Jericho Beach of the downtown skyline with sailboats in the foreground and a rugby game at Brockton Point between Scotland and Western Canada. The film also contains footage of the 1964 Vancouver International Festival featuring art paintings and a mini Eiffel Tower structure at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre court yard, a sequence of the Granville Street Bridge with lamp post banners, sea lions and polar bears at the Stanley Park Zoo, family visit to Haney and the Buddhist Lantern Festival at the Vancouver Buddhist Church at 220 Jackson Street.

Highlights of 1938

Item is a videocassette transfer copy of a 1938 amateur motion picture film depicting a year retrospective for 1938 for the Adam family. The film depicts the family's new house (5689 Angus Drive, W. 40th Ave); travelled on the RMS Queen Mary from New York City to Southampton, England; prepared their yacht for the season; went on holiday to Qualicum Beach, Montague Harbour, and Deep Bay; moved into their new house; and had a baby.

The film also includes local events: construction of the Lion?s Gate Bridge; CPR pier D after being destroyed by fire; burning of a local ice and cold storage plant along with the efforts of firefighters to extinguish the blaze. Other locations visible in the film include Pier 54 in New York, Coal Harbour, the Marine Building and the Royal Bank Building in Vancouver.

Item is an amateur film documenting Vancouver city lights at night in 1964, including several neon signs and Theatre Row on Granville Street. The film also contains snow scenes and footage of the William Gardner family at Capilano Road in North Vancouver in December 1964 and January 1965, and footage of the family at their West Vancouver home between May and July 1965.

For Twenty Cents a Day

Item is a documentary film documenting work shortages during the Depression of the 1930s and the attempts to deal with the unemployed, in particular young men. The film discusses the establishment of relief camps and projects, where men were paid twenty cents per day; the founding of organizations such as the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), Workers' Unity League, and Relief Camp Workers' Union; general unionization and protest of the unemployed, including the On To Ottawa Trek, Regina Riot, sit-in strike from May to June 1938 at the Vancouver Main Post Office, Vancouver Art Gallery and Hotel Georgia, and the resulting Bloody Sunday of June 19. Archival footage and photographs complement the narration. The film includes interviews with Syd Thompson, a participant in the On To Ottawa Trek and later a leader of the IWA Vancouver local, Steve Brodie, leader of the Vancouver sit-in, and poet Dorothy Livesay.

Sawmill fire and Jake Loeppky family

Item is an amateur film documenting family life and a sawmill fire in Vancouver. The film consists of home movie footage filmed by Jake Loeppky, including footage of Queen Elizabeth Park, the Stanley Park Zoo, children playing at the family home in Burnaby, children swimming, and the family entertaining at home. The film also includes footage of a logging camp, a large dam, bears, and people waterskiing. Of particular note is several minutes of footage of the five-alarm fire that destroyed the B.C. Forest Products plant and lumber storage facility at 999 West 6th Avenue on July 3, 1960.

Stanley Park

Film documents the Brockton Point Lighthouse, the south end of the Lions Gate (First Narrows) Bridge (1932-) with heavy vehicle traffic, the exterior of the Stanley Park Dining Pavilion, the seawall with cyclists, and the totem poles at Brockton Point. Footage taken at the VanDusen Garden includes the garden entrance, the administration/library/classroom building, flower beds, roses, trees, ponds, lily pads, blue herons, a starling, and stone sculptures. Footage from Stanley Park includes crowds at the Stanley Park Junction, children and adults riding the Stanley Park Miniature Railway, people watching bears at the Stanley Park Zoo, and other zoo animals including flamingoes and seals. Film also includes footage taken from a sail boat of the Kaiwo Maru in English Bay surrounded by numerous pleasurecraft, with a group of the Kaiwo Maru's crew standing on her bow. The film also includes footage of Vancouver Harbour, downtown Vancouver, and cruise ships at berth as viewed from the deck of a sail boat.

UBC Sculptures and Totem Poles and the Caledonian Games

Item is an amateur film documenting sculptures at the UBC campus, including George Norris' "Mother and Child," Haida and Kwakiutl totem poles at the corner of University Blvd. and East Mall, and Charles Wheeler's "King George VI." There is also footage of the Vancouver Caledonian Games, which begins with a parade of drummers, pipers, and dancers; then footage of Scottish country dancing, kids under thirteen dancing the Sailors Hornpipe, and girls dancing the Highland Fling.

Item is a documentary film documenting downtown Vancouver at night and is mostly made up of footage of neon and illuminated electric signs on Granville Street and in Chinatown. The film documents Granville Street at night, with crowds on the sidewalks and many illuminated electric signs visible, including those of the Orpheum, Vogue, and Odeon theatres. Also included is footage of a lighted fountain, the Hudson's Bay Company Building, and traffic signals. The film also documents the neon signs of a numerous restaurants and businesses in Chinatown, including the Marco Polo Restaurant, Ho Ho Chop Suey, the South Seas, Cathay Importers Company Limited, Ho Inn Chop Suey, Ming's, Asia Garden, and Loon Foon Kwok restaurant.

Spring

Film shows children playing in front of a suburban house, adults around the house sitting and mowing the lawn. After a very dark section around 01:45 the film goes on to show a family exploring a wooded area and playing with a front-end loader in a parking lot and a couple of brief scenes of cows.

1st Narrows Bridge

Item is a color film which details the steps involved in constructing the Lions Gate Bridge (First Narrows Bridge) across the First Narrows of the Burrard Inlet (Vancouver, B.C.) in 1937 and 1938. The film, which appears to be professionally produced, captures the entire construction and assembly process, including the cutting of a road through Stanley Park, preparation of cofferdams and caissons, foundation pouring, erection of the main towers, hoisting and attaching cables, insertion of stiffening trusses, bridge surface pouring, application of protective paint, and other finishing touches, including the installation of sculptor Charles Marega's lions. The film also captures shots of key contributors A.J.T. Taylor and John Anderson, as well as the first cars to cross the span from end to end.

This film contains footage of the Second Narrows Highway Bridge collapse, construction of the Deas Island Tunnel and Woodward's Oakridge Shopping Centre, as well as footage of Centennial Beach Park, Fort Langley Park, Queen Elizabeth Arboretum and the Bowladrome in Kerrisdale. The exterior and interior of a Vancouver home, including footage of children at play and a Christmas celebration, are also documented. There are also images of still photographs from the early 1900s which document sunbathers at a beach, loggers at work and the Stanley Park Hollow Tree. A Pioneer Citizen certificate bearing the name Max Wiehand is also shown.

[Vancouver history and Vancouver in the 1930s]

Item is a documentary film documenting a history of Vancouver using historical photographs, maps and records as well as street scenes of Vancouver in the 1930s. The historical portions of the film contain footage about the pioneers of Vancouver including Captain George Vancouver, John Morton (first resident of what was to become the City of Vancouver), Mr. Wm. Evans (engineer on the first transcontinental train into Port Moody), Lord Granville, John Robson, Richard Earl Howe, Admiral, and Sir Harry Burrard Neale. The film also contains footage of a map of First Narrows, Burrard Inlet, English Bay and nearby Government reserves as well as a map of False Creek, the West End and the East End. In addition there is footage of Hastings Mill (1887), Gastown (1887), the heart of the city (1884), the 1886 fire, City Hall after the fire, the CPR (1887), Indian ranches on Lost Lagoon, clearings near Stanley Park, Vancouver in 1888 and 1890, the entrance to Stanley Park (1890), as well as city scenes of Vancouver in the early twentieth century.

Protest

Item is a documentary film documenting a street demonstration in Vancouver in July 1981 protesting the screening of the sexually explicit feature film Caligula in a conventional movie house (not a pornographic establishment). The film includes footage of a crowd of several dozen adults and children carrying placards and picketing the Towne Cinema (919 Granville Street) where Caligula was being shown, a spokesperson for the organization United Citizens for Integrity explaining their reasons for protest, and a number of heated debates on the street between protestors and bystanders/theatre-goers. Film also includes some general views of Granville Street showing the Towne Cinema and nearby buildings.
