Note on verso reads "This is the entrance to the front door. Frank [Matthews] is on the left. [Martin Matthews is] on the right, Mrs. A.D. Smith (sister-in-law) of Christchurch seated on left, and Sadie [Matthews] on right. [Martin Matthews is] standing under the Thousand Jacket tree. The paths are 5" concrete. The place is full of flowers of all kinds. The window is the window of [Martin Matthews'] room."

Martin Matthews' note on verso reads "This is 59 Ferguson Street, Palmerston, North Island, New Zealand, which took me a year to build and layout the grounds. I had a man for 3 weeks to get roof on and hold long boards. It is a 7 roomed Maori Bungalow. Only one fireplace, all gas, and electricity elsewhere. Build on 1/4 acre section. The main entrance is on the side. The house on the left is our old house which I have rented. The large bay window is the dining room, middle window is a spare bedroom, and the corner bay window is a sitting room, but I use it for a bedroom, it is so sunny in winter."

"Narvaez, Discoverer of Rio Blancho, 1791"

File consists of correspondence and newspaper clippings relating to Matthews' manuscript "Narvaez, Discoverer of Rio Blancho, 1791". Includes the July 1951 issue of the British Columbia News Letter, in which Matthews' ideas about Narvaez are printed. This manuscript was printed as the pamphlet "Pilot Commander Don Jose Maria Narvaez, 1791" for the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first European in 1941.

[Correspondence regarding publications and presentations]

File consists of correspondence regarding Matthews' books, publications, and writings. Includes newspaper clippings, an address for the presentation of a sword, the pamphlet "Pioneers of Vancouver "Before the Train" and John Warren Bell's "British Columbia Memoirs". Correspondence includes letters from Willard E. Ireland, Provincial Archivist, Francis A. Hardy, Parliamentary Librarian, and William Kaye Lamb, Dominion Archivist.

Matthews personal archives of Vancouver's history kept in his home that were viewed by a City Council Committee to discern its recommendations for the future of a City of Vancouver Archives. Includes correspondence, the draft of the report made by the committee, the minutes of the meeting, and Major Matthews speech on the matter to Western Gate Lodge.

J.S. Matthews vault - 402 West Pender

File consists of receipts and correspondence relating to the rental of a safety deposit vault at 402 West Pender. A letter from Matthews states that he arranged a fake robbery from the vault in 1959 in order to make a point to the rental firm about the protection of his material. Also included is a list of historical articles, records, and negatives that were stored in the vault.

File consists of correspondence relating to the Lord Stanley statue, including preparations for its erection, a list of subscribng donors, 7 photographs of memorials, a catalogue of Lithichrome materials, an advertisement for donor subscriptions, meeting minutes, and a technical drawing for the statue's pedestal.

File consists of documentation of the rededication of Stanley Park and the unveiling ceremony of the Lord Stanley Statue. File consists of documentation of City Council resolutions regarding the Archives--what Matthews refers to as "The Rape of the Archives". Includes correspondence, the "Report of an Investigation into the Vancouver City Archives" by Provincial Archivist, John Hosie, and 5 photographs of "The Rape of the Archives".

Freemen of Vancouver - Chief Justice Farris' remark

File consists of documents relating to Matthews' Freeman of Vancouver award and Chief Justice Farris' remark. Includes correspondence, an invitation to the 75th anniversary of the first City Council meeting celebration, the pamphlet "Pioneers of Vancouver Before the Train", a copy if the certificate conferring freedom of the city on Major Matthews, newspaper clippings, invitations to the Stanley Park commemoration, the December 1953 issue of the British Columbia News Letter, and a list of the Freemen of Vancouver.

File consists of materials relating to what Major Matthews terms "The Rape of the Archives"--that is, the City of Vancouver's resolutions to take control of the Archives. Includes correspondence and an account of the event written by J.S. Matthews entitled "A Scandalous Incident: A scene in the Corporation Counsel's office". Also includes 8 duplicate photographs of "The Rape of the Archives", Hosie's report, and a copy of the agreement between Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Matthews and the City of Vancouver annotated with Matthews' commentary.
