Drawings of 718 Granville Street for Henry Birks & Sons

Collection consists of copies of construction drawings for the building. The Birks Building was constructed between 1911 and 1912 from the designs of the architectural firm of Somervell and Putnam. The 11-storey building was situated at 718 Granville Street at Georgia Street. The building served as the home for its owners, Montreal jewellers, Henry Birks & Sons. Its most famous feature was the Birks Clock, which stands at the street corner. The building was demolished in 1974 to allow construction of the Vancouver Centre. The collection has been assigned microfilm number M-110.

Front elevation

Item is an elevation drawing. The drawing has the following attestation: G.L. Warner Ltd., 1410 Royal Bank Building, Vancouver, B.C., but as this company was an insurance broker and real estate agents, it is unlikely they were responsible for creating the drawing.

It it most likely that the house was never built, as tax records show no improvements to the property until after Mrs. Oram sold it in 1936.
