Vancouver Centennial Commission fonds

Fonds consists of subject files, project applications and other records documenting the activities of the Vancouver Centennial Commission and the various events and programs that took place during the Centennial year. Document types include correspondence, financial records, proposals, minutes, reports, agreements, publications, application forms, certificates, graphic material, photographs, sound recordings, audiovisual material and ephemera.
The fonds is arranged into the following three original series: Housekeeping subject files (1980-1987), Program subject files (1956-1987, predominent 1979-1987), and Centennial project applications (1982-1987 [microfilmed 1999], and three additional series established by the Archivist for material acquired by the Archives from various sources: Executive Director records (1981-1987), Commissioner Ann Yandle records (1983-1987), and Centennial program records collected by the Archives (1983-1987).

Centennial program records collected by the Archives

Series consists of publications and ephemera of various organizations relating to their Centennial activities, sent to the Vancouver Archives at the behest of the Vancouver Centennial Commission. These events were endorsed by the Commission and organizations received funding for them from the City of Vancouver (via the Vancouver Centennial Commission) and the Department of the Secretary of State. Series also includes some material accumulated by City Archivist Sue Baptie while participating in Centennial projects and committees in her role as a Commissioner.

1936 babies

File consists of correspondence concerning early Vancouver history and pioneers sent to the Vancouver Centennial Commission and forwarded to the Archives. Subjects include a Golden Jubilee Luncheon held in honour of infants born in Vancouver on June 13, 1936, the Vancouver Pioneers Association, Joe Fortes, Charles Steele, Maggie McNeil, Hastings Sawmill School, and the Joseph W. Palmer family.

1986 Centennial

File contains records accumulated by former City Archivist Sue Baptie during her participation in Centennial projects and committees. Includes records related to the creation of Centennial Resource Kits in conjunction with the Vancouver School Board, various Centennial project proposals involving the Archives, the Heritage Program Group, Vancouver Museum projects, the Plaque Program Committee, and the Public Institutions Division of the Vancouver Centennial Commission.

Centennial - school sports

File consists of a material relating to the BC School Sports Provincial Championships held during the Centennial Year, and includes material concerning the following sports: football, table tennis, boys' basketball, girls' field hockey, soccer, swimming, and girls' volleyball.

Channel 13

File consists of correspondence and a videocassette from television station VU13 (CKVU-TV), in response to a request from the City of Vancouver Archives requesting additional materials to be added to their files in the Centennial Committee collection.

CKVU-DT

City of Vancouver Centennial 1986 : map 1 major streets and map 2 downtown area [maps in Braille] : sponsored by the Vancouver Arbutus Rotary Club and the Vancouver South Rotary Club

File consists of a binder containing Vancouver maps that have been re-created for the visually-impaired as a Centennial project, using a combination of raised lines, texture, and Braille. The maps were illustrated by Lianne Smithaniuk and transcribed by Barbara Morrison. Inscription on the inside of the binder reads "Presented to His Worship Mayor Michael Harcourt by James Sanders, Executive Director, B.C. - Yukon Division, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, April 15th, 1986."

Correspondence

File consists of a letter from Vancouver Centennial Commission Exectuve Director Robert Dubberly to organizations participating in the Centennial Celebrations, encouraging them to forward records pertaining to their event to the Archives, with attached letter from Sue Baptie to Robert Dubberly.

Jewish Community Centre

File consists of articles, programs, circulars and invitations relating to special events held by the Jewish Community Centre in honour of the Centennial. The events were the Jewish Visions Show, Showcase of Canadian Jewish Writers, and Jewish Life in Song.

Kiwanis Club of Vancouver

File consists of a material relating to the Kiwanis Club's Centennial project, which culminated in a Centennial luncheon in honour of 21 companies established in Vancouver before 1900. Includes a copy of the luncheon programme and pamphlet titled "21 Pioneer Enterprises, Vancouver, 1886 to 1986," as well as three contact sheets with a total of 33 images taken at the luncheon.
