Strong - Jack and Pat LaBelle

Collector/curator's description reads: “C. 1925, Vancouver. This image was part of a set of promotional photographs taken in the 1920s of Jack Strong with a female performer, likely his girlfriend Pat LaBelle. Although of average height and weight, Strong was renowned for his strength and wrestling skills. He ran a traveling vaudeville show called the Jack Strong's Wonder Novelty Show. Vaudeville was popular entertainment in the late 19th and early 20th century and included wrestlers, singers, dancers, comedians and magicians. Strong lived until age 76. However, Pat who was billed as a ‘female Houdini,’ was killed in an automobile accident in 1930. She was only 23. This is one of a series of four photos taken the same day.”

Vancouver : city of century

Item is a videocassette containing a documentary about the city of Vancouver and Vancouver life, developed for the centennial celebrations. It includes a short introduction to the history of the city up to the 1920s using historical photographs, some film footage of First Nations peoples, and voiceover narrative.

The next section focuses on transportation, featuring scenes of airplanes, the BC ferry, the Seabus, the SkyTrain, ships in the harbour, steamboats, and cruise ships. The focus shifts towards nature and leisure activities as Stanley Park is explored with a historical photograph montage followed by film footage of park and aquarium scenes, including polar bears, penguins, river otters and killer whales. Grouse Mountain is illustrated through shots of the gondola, ski lift, and scenes of skiing. Other sport scenes include sailing ships, ocean and river kayaking, car races, bicycle races, horse races, hockey, football, boxing, golf, soccer and tennis. Life on the water is emphasised with a section on the bathtub race and associated celebrations, beach scenes, and a paddle boat tour around various Vancouver landmarks.

The next section contains a presentation of the centennial theme song ‘The Vancouver Song’ or ‘Vancouver (you'll always look like home to me)’ over a montage of scenes of the Expo Centre, the harbour, downtown, and Stanley Park.

The documentary concludes with scenes of the city at night, including Granville Island, Robson Square, neon signs downtown and at Chinese restaurants, the Expo Centre illuminated with Expo 86 lighting and shots of the sunset over the bay.

Chan - Quay and family - 1915

Collector/curator's description reads: “1915, Vancouver. Photo of Chan Quay and his wife, Lam Shee, along with their children. Front row (left to right): Git Sen (Lillian) Chan; Lam Shee; Chan Quay; and Nai Wing Chan. Back row (left to right): Nai Quong Chan and Keng Sen (Mary) Chan. Chan Quay Family. Chan Quay, shown here with his family in 1915, decided not to stay in Canada. He paid the head tax and arrived in Victoria in 1896. For years he successfully operated [Wo] Sang Merchant Tailor shops first in Victoria and then in Vancouver. Quay also was very active in his clan society and led the efforts to construct the Chin Wing Chun Tong society building on Pender Street. However, something drew him back to China. In 1928, he sold the tailor shop and left for China with his wife and two youngest children. He died in China in 1940. Lillian Chan Mah Collection (99).”

Ramsey, Gladys - late 1930s

Collector/curator?s description reads: ?Circa 1940, Vancouver. Minnie Gladys Ramsey sits for a photo. Born in Indiana, she came to Vancouver to live with her grandmother. Gladys was the niece of Ruth Ramsey Holmes, even though there was only 5 years difference between them. Gladys's parents were never married, so she was a Ramsey. Her given name was Minnie Gladys Ramsey. Her first married name was Minnie Gladys Gordon. Later she was married to a Dickerson. She was born on the 7th day of January 1919 in Keystone, Alberta, and died at the age of 61 years in Colorado Springs, Colorado on March 11, 1980. She died of pancreatic cancer. She had worked as a nurse's aid for 14 years.?

Lawrence - Louis and Edna-wedding - 1940s - BW [black and white]

Collector/curator?s description reads: ?1940s, Vancouver (518 Main St). L to R: Howard Fair (full name John Howard Stillman Fair); Louis Sterling Lawrence (1927-2013), Edna Lillian Lawrence; and an unidentified woman. Louis Sterling Lawrence (June 21, 1927-October 18, 2013) was born in Fredericton, NB and came to Vancouver after WWII. A right-handed boxer, who liked to do battle from a deep crouch, he had a solid record in his five-year professional career. He won 20 fights, lost two, and had four draws. Half his victories came through knockouts. His career culminated in 1955 when he won Canada's middleweight boxing championship. After winning the title, the fighter never boxed again. He relinquished the title through inactivity after two years. Louis was employed by Canadian Pacific Railway/ Via Rail and retired after 38 years of service. Louis died in 2013 at the age of 86. Note: John Howard Fair (b: June 22 1928- died 1988).?

Holmes Ruth - 1956

Collector/curator?s description reads: ?1956, Vancouver. Portrait of Ruth Holmes in her nursing outfit. Ruth Holmes (nee Ramsey) was born in Keystone, Alberta on March 13, 1914, and she died on Jan. 26th, 2003 in Vancouver, at the age of 88. She married Benjamin Pope on May 19th, 1946 in Bellingham, Washington, but they separated in 1948 and divorced in 1955. They had no children. On July 6th 1957 she married Emmitt Andrew Holmes in Vancouver to whom she remained married until her death. They had no children. Ruth did have TB sometime in the early 50s, and spent some time in the Tranquille Sanitorium in Kamloops, B.C. Once cured, she entered nursing, and met Emmitt. This photo was taken circa 1956 when she graduated from nursing school.?

Tourism B.C. Marketplace Progam [Program] - Expo 86

Item is "Marketplace Program" produced for EXPO 86 and Tourism BC. Major exhibition in BC Pavilion for EXPO 86. Multi-screen laser disc interactive display. Laser discs were very new at this time and cost over $2500 each to manufacture. This laser disc was produced to be used with specially designed players that would allow for touch-screen interaction from visitors to the B.C. Pavilion. These machines no longer exist; to get an idea of what options were made available pause the playback to view what the touch-screen displays looked like.
Item includes visual vignettes featuring footage to represent various geographical areas of the province of British Columbia. Theme music plays in the background of the scenes; no dialogue. Brief written descriptions of each area of the province precede each section of footage. At 00:10:23 - 00:10:24 screen shots of all of the various touch screen menu screens appear - to see these please slow down the playback and pause for each. Starting at 00:10:26 the footage plays out that would have been associated and parsed out for the various selected menu choices. At 00:12:08-00:12:11 more screen shots of selections flash by, again slow or pause to view these fully. Starting at 00:12:12 more groupings of clips of British Columbia can be viewed. Zesko - David and Helen - wedding - 1942

Collector/curator’s description reads: “November 8, 1942, Vancouver. Wedding photo of David Zesko (age 32) and Helen Klimec (18) [19]. The couple also paid to have a copy of this photo hand painted, which they framed. David Zesko was b: July 17, 1910, d: April 5, 1974. Helen Zesko (nee Klimec) was b: Nov. 12, 1912 [1923], d: Nov. 3, 2012.”

Unidentified Chinese man with prize - early 1930s [Thomas Lowe]

Collector/curator’s description reads: “1930s, Vancouver. And unidentified young Chinese man standing in front of a miniature, decorative wagon. It appears he may have won some type of competition as there are ribbons on the wagon. One ribbon reads ‘British Columbia.’ And the other ribbon reads ‘Junior Second Award Place. Fisker [Fisher] Body's Craftsman Guild.’”
The man was subsequently identified as Thomas Lowe.

Collector/curator’s description reads: “C. 1943, Vancouver. Night photograph taken from the sidewalk of the windows of Yucho Chow Studio at 518 Main Street. Believed to have been shot shortly after the front facade was changed from wood to tile. A photograph of the Hollywood singer/actor Roy Rogers can be seen in the right side window wearing a dark cowboy hat. Later Roy Rogers only wore white cowboy hats.”

Collector/curator’s description reads: “C. 1944, Vancouver. Photograph of the front of Vogue Photo Studios. Vogue Studios was owned by Yucho Chow and was located at 128 West Hastings Street (Vancouver). Chow's sons Peter and Philip ran this studio, while Yucho continued to operate the main studio at 518 Main Street. Vogue Studio was only in existence a few years (1943-1946) and likely was closed due to the fact that Yucho Chow lost a lawsuit in 1945 and was required to pay his nephew, Chow Neen, $2100.”
