The Jack Bird Story

Collection consists of sixteen letters written by Jack Bird while living in the Vancouver area, 1951-1962. The letters are addressed to Miss Ramayeo Yeomans of Brandon, Manitoba, who arranged the letters and accompanying photographs into a binder which she titled "The Jack Bird Story." Subjects relating to Vancouver covered in the letters include Stanley Park and its features, such as the 'Ladybug' tour bus, Shakespeare Garden, and Lost Lagoon; the depression of the 1930s; royal visits in 1951 and 1958; the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games; an eyewitness account of the aftermath of the Second Narrows Bridge collapse in 1958; visits of Hal Holbrook and Gladys Aylward; Pauline Johnson; museum and art gallery exhibits; as well as Bird's befriending of Herbert Emerson Wilson and his work in Wilson's crime museum. The letters also document Bird's experiences while living on Burrard Inlet in North Burnaby, in Pender Harbour and Van Ada on Texada Island, as well as the wildlife, climate and topography of these places. Some of Bird's activities that are described are his attempt to build a large raft out of rescued logs, and fishing and livering dogfish on a scow at Scottie Bay, Lasqueti Island and Blind Bay, British Columbia. Also documented in the letters are Bird's recollections of his youth in Estevan, Saskatchewan and Brandon, Manitoba; his travels throughout the world and in Victoria, Ocean Falls, Prince Rupert, the Rockies, Whitehorse, the Yukon and Alaska; and his experiences fighting in France and living in England during World War II.
Photographs depict Jack Bird, the building of his raft, his house on Burrard Inlet, his boat, his world travels, his paintings and books, and his experience fishing and livering dogfish on a scow at Scottie Bay and Blind Bay.
Also included are published articles and other accompanying contextual and biographical information relating to Jack Bird and to Ramayeo Yeomans, as well as a postcard of the Baha'i Temple in Wilmette, Illinois.
