Tourism B.C. Marketplace Progam [Program] - Expo 86

Item is "Marketplace Program" produced for EXPO 86 and Tourism BC. Major exhibition in BC Pavilion for EXPO 86. Multi-screen laser disc interactive display. Laser discs were very new at this time and cost over $2500 each to manufacture. This laser disc was produced to be used with specially designed players that would allow for touch-screen interaction from visitors to the B.C. Pavilion. These machines no longer exist; to get an idea of what options were made available pause the playback to view what the touch-screen displays looked like.
Item includes visual vignettes featuring footage to represent various geographical areas of the province of British Columbia. Theme music plays in the background of the scenes; no dialogue. Brief written descriptions of each area of the province precede each section of footage. At 00:10:23 - 00:10:24 screen shots of all of the various touch screen menu screens appear - to see these please slow down the playback and pause for each. Starting at 00:10:26 the footage plays out that would have been associated and parsed out for the various selected menu choices. Gastown - Vancouver BC - VanDusen Gardens

Item is a documentary film documenting Gastown and the VanDusen Botanical Display Garden. Film includes footage taken in Gastown of the Captain John "Gassy Jack" Deighton statue, Hotel Europe, Water Street, the Old Spaghetti Factory, Vancouver Harbour Centre, SS Beaver replica at its moorings, Frisby's Restaurant, Seven Seas Imports, The Coggery, Gaslight Square (131 Water Street), the Gastown Steam Clock. The film also includes footage of a number of signs of Gastown businesses and places including Bootlegger, The Dublin House Irish Fashions, Tiffany Coiffures, Brother John's Restaurant, Cottage Deli Soup 'n' Sandwich, and Blood Alley Square. The film also includes footage taken at VanDusen Botanical Display Garden including shots of the entrance sign, parking lot, administration building, garden entrance, flowers, several ponds, a fountain, MacMillan Bloedel Place, children feeding geese, pavilions, ducks, swans, a bee, and a blue heron.

Vancouver and Stanley Park

Item is a documentary film documenting Stanley Park, downtown Vancouver, the Vancouver Planetarium, and Vanier Park. The film documents a number of attractions within Stanley Park including the Stanley Park Miniature Railway, Stanley Park Junction, various sections of the seawall, the Brockton Point Lighthouse, Coal Harbour Marina, Elek Imredy's sculpture Girl in a Wetsuit, the replica figurehead of the RMS Empress of Japan, tennis courts, Prospect Point lookout, Lost Lagoon, the Stanley Park Golf Course, totem poles, and the Lions Gate (First Narrows) Bridge (1938-). The film also includes footage of birds including Canada geese, seagulls, swans, mallard and wood ducks, and peacocks. The film documents Vancouver Harbour and its facilities, and includes footage of shipping containers, cranes, cargo ships, seabus, and a floatplane.

The film also documents downtown Vancouver and includes footage of numerous prominent buildings including the Marine Building, Vancouver Harbour Centre, Bayshore Inn, the Westcoast Energy Building, Hotel Vancouver, the Provincial Court House, Robson Square under construction, the Georgia Medical Dental Building, the Bank of Nova Scotia Tower, TD Tower, the Vancouver Block, Commodore Ballroom, Sun Tower, Dominion Building, Andrew Wesley Church, and the Hudson's Bay Company building. The film also contains night footage of the Vancouver skyline, Granville Street with illuminated signs, a fountain lit by coloured lights, and neon signs in Chinatown, including those for the Marco Polo Chinese Smorgasbord, Loon Foon Kwok restaurant, Ming's, South Seas Dining Lounge, Ho Inn Chop Suey, and Bing C. Wong & Associates Accounting and Taxation Service.

Film also includes footage of the exterior of the Bloedel Conservatory, a tugboat in False Creek, the downtown Vancouver skyline as viewed from Kitsilano, an old house (number 1160, street unknown), sailboats in English Bay, the Vancouver Planetarium, Vanier Park, and Beach Avenue as seen across False Creek from Vanier Park.

VanDusen Gardens, Gastown - Vancouver, B.C.

Item is a documentary film documenting the VanDusen Botanical Display Garden, as well as tourist attractions and businesses in Gastown. Film documents areas of the VanDusen Garden including the parking lot, administration building, main entrance, pavilions, greenhouses, MacMillan Bloedel Place, several ponds and gardens. The film also includes footage of bees, mallard ducks, Canadian geese, black swans, blue herons, and children feeding geese. The film also documents street scenes, tourist attractions, and prominent buildings in Gastown. It features footage of the replica SS Beaver at its moorings, shops including The Coggery and a silver and goldsmith, a busker with a banjo, a mural and signs for Brother Jon's Restaurant (1 Water Street), the Old Spaghetti Factory, a wooden bhudda statue outside of a store, the Europe Hotel, Steam Clock, Gassy Jack statue, Vancouver Harbour Centre, and views of Water Street.

PNE Parade - Start of the RCMP Musical Ride

Item is an amateur film documenting the 1958 Vancouver Pacific National Exhibition Parade and British Columbia scenery. The film begins with footage of floats in the P.N.E parade. Identified floats and performers include the train from Montreal to Port Moody 1886, New Westminster, Comox Valley, Sannich, Vancouver Fire Department, Fraser Expedition, Canadian Order of Foresters, The Moonlighters, Horseshoe Bay, and the P.N.E Minstrel Band. Businesses and buildings shown include Standard Stations, British American Oil Company, Canadian Pacific Railroad, Radio CKWX 1130, Hotel Vancouver, Georgia Hotel, the Provincial Courthouse, and Pacific Western Airlines. Footage also shows downtown street banners. The second half of the film includes footage of the RCMP riding onto Hastings Park racetrack in formation in front of an RCMP band being conducted and a crowd. Houses in the Hastings-Sunrise area to the east of Hastings Park are also shown.

Stratford Hotel Fire

Item is an organizational record film documenting the Vancouver Fire Department's rescue work after the fire at the Stratford Hotel, located at Gore Avenue and Keefer Street. Film shows firefighters escorting victims from the building and performing first aid, ambulances and firetrucks, and spectators watching the scene.

Item is a videotape containing an edited video travel diary showing Malcolm Crane and Stanley Weese's trip to Kenya from November 27-December 18, 1991. The tape is narrated by Stanley Weese and contains titles for each day of the trip. There are scenes showing airports, documents, maps, animals, food, drink, people, souvenirs, plants and scenery. Crane and Weese take turns speaking to the camera about their travels including accommodations, food and sights.
