The collection consists of a letter dated 2 October 1794, which was written by Vancouver while on board the "Discovery" in Nootka Sound. It was addressed to the father of a midshipman in the crew. The letter deals with business matters, but Vancouver also notes that they were unable to find any northwest passage and therefore they had no reason to remain in the area.

The collection consists of two scrapbooks entitled "Mark Twain's Adhesive Scrap Book" patented 1873. Both volumes consist of newspaper cuttings from the Victoria newspapers. They are mainly concerned with political disputes and actions relating to land, finance, railways and labour. Many "Letters to the Editor" are included, also long passages quoting speeches from meetings in the House (B.C.) and other places. It is as if Robert Beaven, the collector of these clippings, were keeping a close watch on what the politicians of his day were thinking and doing, also the public as revealed by Letters to the Editor. Some of the matters discussed include The Chinese (in U.S.A., B.C. and Australia), School Costs (not Vancouver), Burrard Inlet and Queen of Vancouver Island.

Presented to City of Vancouver by the Vancouver Daily Province, June 13, 1951"; these records are the Coroner's Precept, the Inquisition, and records of evidence submitted. The inquest was held on 14 June 1886, summoned by J.C. Hughes, Coroner, and conducted before twelve jurors. The victims were John Craswell and others.
