Homes on Deadman's Island with resident Mr. Secarre
Part of Helen Dawe fonds
Item is a photograph showing Mr. Secarre in between two homes on Deadman's Island. Annotation on back of photograph: "Deadman's Island, photographed in 1898 by Thomas John Cook of Vancouver and Sechelt. Both 'Johnny' Cook and his brother Fred Cook worked on Canadian Pacific's 'Empress of India.' There was a horrid stench around these homes on Deadman's Is., Burrard Inlet. There were a number of floating houses such as these. Mr. Fred Cook took his niece, Ada Cook, and his galvanic battery to Deadman's Island to give Mr. Sekar (spelling?) a treatment for rheumatism. Fred Cook was a butcher and Ada Cook married Sam Dawe. Mr. Sekar gave his guests delicious plum pudding. Mr. Secarre (spelling doubtful) (Sekar), photo by T.J. Cook. Mr. Secarre was a chef at Banff in the early C.P.R. days."
