UBC bashes 1953-1954

File consists of photographs of University of British Columbia students at various parties or "bashes" from May 18, 1953 to December 31, 1954.

King Edward High School photographs

File consists of group photographs taken for the "Blue and White" newspaper at King Edward High School in 1948. Includes photographs of divisions, the orchestra, publications board and sports groups, including the girl's basketball and grass hockey teams. Some names of students have been written on the back of the prints.

Fonds consists of photographs, audiovisual material and some textual material created or accumulated by Joe Quan. The fonds contains three 16 mm films of the 1958 Chinatown Dragon Parade, the 1960 Chinatown Parade, and Miss Chinatown pageant 1960. Also included in the fonds are photographs relating to the Republic of China (Taiwan)'s participation in the 1959 Pacific National Exhibition (PNE); the 18th Convention of the Canadian Food Processors Association and Parade of Oriental Fashions, 1965; the Year of the Serpent Chinese New Year Festival Banquet, 1965; and the C. Itoh & Co. reception at the Bayshore Inn on December 21, 1966, all arranged into albums. The fonds also includes slides of construction in the 800 block Thurlow Street, circa 1957; the Middle Arm Bridge (Moray Bridge), May 31, 1957; the Royal Visit and the opening of the Deas Island Tunnel, July 1959; a Chow Mein Tea at the Pender YMCA, September 25, 1959; Fashion Parades, February 1960; and a staff Christmas party at Trader Vic’s in 1969. Additional photographs document an event at the Chinese Consulate, circa 1960; UBC student parties in 1953 and 1954; as well as Royal Bank staff parties 1981 to 1997 and Chinese New Year celebrations in 1991. The fonds also includes King Edward High School annuals 1946 to 1949, as well as photographs and a videocassette of the 50th reunion of the class of 1949, and a file of newspaper clippings and photographs pertaining to Sylvia Ablowitz, after whom the Sylvia Hotel was named.

File consists of photographs pertaining to Sylvia Ablowitz (nee Goldstein), after whom the Sylvia Hotel was named; including photograph prints showing celebrating Sylvia's 100th and 102nd birthdays, family members sitting shiva following her death in 2002, as well as a negative of her graduation portrait from UBC in 1921.

King Edward High School : the lion annuals 1946 to 1949 and graduating exercises June 14, 1949

File consists of copies of The Lion, the King Edward High School yearbook, for the years 1946 to 1949, plus a copy of the program for the graduating exercises of June 14, 1949. Includes two copies of the 1948 annual, one inscribed by fellow students and staff, and one in its original condition. The 1946 and 1949 annuals are also inscribed by students and staff.

Publications concerning Chinatown and Vancouver

File consists of publications relating to Chinatown and Vancouver in general. Includes the December 18, 1984 and the July 18, 1971 British Columbia Centennial souvenir edition of the Chinatown News, the Fall 1961 Beautiful British Columbia containing an article about Chinatown, and the Vancouver City Savings Credit Union 1982 calendar featuring drawings of Vancouver heritage buildings by Raymond Chow.

File consists of photographs from an album showing the C. Itoh & Co. reception at the Bayshore Inn on December 21, 1966. Photographs include group shots of guests sitting at tables and dancing, as well as images showing other activities at the event.

Photograph album : Parade of Oriental Fashions, 18th Convention of the Canadian Food Processors Association and Year of the Serpent banquet

Item is an album containing photographs of the Parade of Oriental Fashions event at the 18th convention of the Canadian Food Processors Association as well as a program for the convention. The parade took place on January 22, 1965 in the Mai Tai Room of the Bayshore Inn. Photographs show female models wearing Asian dress, a fashion show and attendees.

The album also includes photographs of the Year of the Serpent Chinese New Year Festival Banquet held at the W.K. Gardens on February 26, 1965. The banquet was held in conjunction with the Spring Carnival Committee, and was sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Vancouver Visitors Bureau and the Chinese community. Included are photographs of various Vancouver pageant queens, Miss San Francisco Chinatown, Miss Chinatown USA first princess, and the crowning of a young woman with a serpent headdress and crown.

Notes at the back of the album list orders received for copies and provide some identification of those individuals appearing in the photographs.

Photographs : Pacific National Exhibition 1959

Item is an album containing photographs relating to the Republic of China (Taiwan)'s participation in the 1959 Pacific National Exhibition (PNE), the theme of which was "Salute to the Pacific." Includes photographs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) pavilion, the visit of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker to the pavilion and the PNE Outdoor Theatre, and various Chinese musical and dance performances on the theatre stage. Also included in the album are photographs of a traditional Chinese dress fashion show, an aerial motorcycle act, the acceptance of a painting by Mayor A.T. Alsbury and Alderman F. Fredrickson, women and a girl in traditional dress posing with a dragon statue, and what appears to be a group of Chinese officials standing in front of the pavilion.
