Stratford Hotel Fire

Item is an organizational record film documenting the Vancouver Fire Department's rescue work after the fire at the Stratford Hotel, located at Gore Avenue and Keefer Street. Film shows firefighters escorting victims from the building and performing first aid, ambulances and firetrucks, and spectators watching the scene.

The map also shows False Creek Trail, North Arm Road, False Creek Road, Granville Road from Granville to Hastings, New Westminster and Burrard Inlet Road, North Road, Semiahmoo Road, New Westminster and Yale Wagon Road, and others. Annotated by W. E. Graveley, 1885, to show additional features including Kingsway, Haney, Albion Camp, etc.

Shops, City Hospital, sawmill, slaughter houses, and smallpox hospital). The map includes "Index of Streets, Government Offices, Churches, [etc.], including "Civic and other Principal Buildings", "Places of Amusement or Recreation", "Public Schools", "Principal Mills, Foundries and Manufactories", "Principle Bankers", Principal Hotels", and "Miscellaneous".

The map was designed to be folded into a cover, which is included.

The artwork consists of the Chinese characters spelling out Yucho Chow Studio but disguised as a photographer standing next to a large format camera. This seal became the studio’s most common logo.”

Collector/curator’s description reads: “C. 1943, Vancouver. Night photograph taken from the sidewalk of the windows of Yucho Chow Studio at 518 Main Street. Believed to have been shot shortly after the front facade was changed from wood to tile. A photograph of the Hollywood singer/actor Roy Rogers can be seen in the right side window wearing a dark cowboy hat. Later Roy Rogers only wore white cowboy hats.”

Collector/curator’s description reads: “C. 1944, Vancouver. Photograph of the front of Vogue Photo Studios. Vogue Studios was owned by Yucho Chow and was located at 128 West Hastings Street (Vancouver). Chow's sons Peter and Philip ran this studio, while Yucho continued to operate the main studio at 518 Main Street. Vogue Studio was only in existence a few years (1943-1946) and likely was closed due to the fact that Yucho Chow lost a lawsuit in 1945 and was required to pay his nephew, Chow Neen, $2100.”
