Bicycle ride

Item is an amateur film which captures images of Vancouver in 1974 as the creator, Hans Sipma, rode his bicycle about the city. The ride begins near Semlin Dr. and 1st Ave. and proceeds north to Kitchener St., then turns left onto Garden Drive and continues to East Hastings. Some storefronts on East Hastings are briefly visible before the ride continues northbound on Nanaimo, with Crown Mountain and Mt. Fromme visible on the horizon. The ride proceeds north to Wall St., and then along Wall St. eastbound to the Second Narrows Bridge (now the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing).

Crossing into North Vancouver, the bike is directed westbound along Main, Cotton Dr., and Low Level Rd., where the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool substation is visible. The bike detours over the train tracks and onto Pier 94, capturing images of ships, cranes, and lumber piles before continuing west via Esplanade Ave., Forbes Ave., and 3rd St. to Marine Drive. The ride then captures stills westbound along Marine Drive, passing Pemberton Ave. and Capilano Rd. before crossing Lions Gate Bridge back into Vancouver.

From the bridge, Mr. Sipma ventured up on a trail to Prospect Point before proceeding southbound on Stanley Park Dr., then catching another trail down to Third Beach. Along the seawall numerous people are seen walking, and the downtown skyline grows nearer. He proceeds past Second Beach Pool and captures several stills of Englesea Lodge. As he travels down the Seaside Bicycle Route, the Burrard Street Bridge can be seen in the background.

He makes his way up Beach Ave. before carrying his bicycle up a set of concrete stairs to the surface of Burrard Street Bridge, where he dodges those walking on the sidewalk as he rides southbound. He pauses briefly at the intersection of Burrard and Cornwall before riding southeast toward Granville Island. As he continues along the Seaside Bicycle Route, a great deal of construction can be seen along the south side waterfront of False Creek. There are glimpses of the north shore of False Creek. Mr. Sipma emerges from the trail and heads east, pausing briefly at Cambie and 2nd Ave. before heading along 1st Ave. He heads north up Quebec St. He then turns to head back home, heading down Main St., and then 1st Ave. via Terminal Ave until he hits Victoria Dr., from which he turns homebound into an alley just as the film runs out. During his ride, Mr. Sipma captures gas prices, buses, cars, stores, signs, city skylines and buildings, clothing, and much more in 1974 Vancouver.

Vancouver honeymoon

Film is a travelogue showcasing scenery, attractions and industry in the Vancouver area. Film contains general and aerial views of Vancouver, plus sequences of the harbour, Vancouver International Airport, Stanley Park, UBC, the Vancouver International Festival and the PNE. Industry is depicted through shots of a sawmill, a fish cannery, a foundry and a shipyard (where the vessel Yukon is launched). Water sports, golf and skiing at Grouse Mountain are shown, as well as Queen Elizabeth Park, Capilano Suspension Bridge, the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Granville Street at night and a White Spot drive-in. Individuals involved with the production of the film include: Jim Richardson (script), David Bennett (director), A.J.H. Item is a film showing various scenes around Vancouver. The first half of this film documents a Gray Line Tours bus trip through Vancouver and second half contains scenes showing landmarks of Vancouver and surrounding areas. Film contains footage showing: Empress of Japan Figurehead in Stanley Park, U.B.C., Chinatown, Hotel Georgia, Lion's Gate Bridge, Court House, Capilano Suspension Bridge, Capilano Golf and Country Club, Prospect Point, Stanley Park, views of downtown and North Shore Mountains from Little Mountain, City Hall, sailboats in Burrard Inlet, and Swimmers at Kits Beach.

Horse races and Shetland Ponies, Virginia and Family

Item is a film containing footage of a pageant, people riding horses and ponies, the Capilano Suspension Bridge and surrounding area, the Capilano River valley and surrounding trails, orchestra at Malkin Bowl, a picnic, children playing in backyard and wading pool (possibly at 3846 West 10th), May Day Parade in downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park gardens, George Vancouver statue and City Hall campus, Vancouver skyline view from City Hall and children playing in grassy area.

Capilano

Item is a promotional film for the British Properties Limited, Capilano Estates containing title cards. The film shows the properties including houses, the golf course, the tool house, the club house and surrounding landscape. The film also shows the clearing of land by British Properties.

Return Victorious!

Item is a film showing the North Vancouver School Band welcomed back to Vancouver after having won the Canadian National Exhibition band championship. Band members are greeted at the CPR station by family members. North Vancouver Mayor William Angus, and school board Chairman Robert S. Thorpe speak. The band travels in a procession of cars across Lion's Gate Bridge and through North Vancouver to a school auditorium. Various shots of cameramen filming the event throughout. Item is a film consisting of at least seven separate pieces of amateur film footage spliced together. Film includes black and white footage taken at Grouse Mountain in 1930 showing men and women skiing, a snowplough clearing snow, a dogsled, and a black bear cub playing with a dog. The remaining film footage is in colour, and includes George Thompson jumping obstacles on horseback in 1947; 1948 footage of the Thompson's champion horse Goldheart and two men riding in a chariot pulled by Goldheart and another horse; a large number of spectators sitting in stands to watch an unidentified event in West Vancouver in 1950; cabins and horses at Knox Lake in 1979; and the Thompson's house and gardens at 865 Wildwood Lane, West Vancouver in 1979 and 1980.

Item is a film showing the inaugural journey of Lady Lynn, a small fishing boat. The boat is driven through Vancouver to the docks, where it is placed into the water. The film shows multiple fishing trips with friends and family to Deep Cove, Galiano Island, and other places likely in and around the Burrard Inlet. There is footage of travelling along the water north of Stanley Park, under the Lions Gate Bridge, passing by the light house at Brockton Point, and around the marine gas stations in Coal Harbour. There is also footage of the Mount Seymour Coffee Bar and the Galiano Lodge.

Boalts ‘26

Item is an amateur film showing people with dogs in the snow and Sam and Margaret Magoffin with her parents, the Boalts, having a picnic in the woods, at the Capilano Suspension Bridge, and then at the beach where the men change a tire on the car. Also included in the film are scenes taken at home with the women knitting and sewing, Margaret and her parents exiting the Devonshire Hotel and entering a car with the courthouse in the background, people waving from the back of a train, and Sam and Margaret standing by a window.

Vancouver Harbour Northshore Terminal [Railway]

Item is an amateur film showing the work of the S.S. Magoffin & Co. Limited Railway Contractors company during construction of the North Shore Terminal Railway in North Vancouver. Activities documented include the blasting and clearing of soil and rock with steam shovels, railway cars transporting and dumping soil over a trestle and men sawing railway ties. Includes many scenes of workers and other individuals, possibly including Vancouver Harbour Commissioners, footage of land owned by the B.C. Mills Timber and Trading Company Limited.

Northshore Terminal Railway - Vancouver Harbour

Item is an amateur film showing the work of the S.S. Magoffin & Co. Limited Railway Contractors company, likely during construction of the North Shore Terminal Railway in North Vancouver. Activities documented include the blasting and clearing of soil and rock by work crews and steam shovels, locomotives transporting soil and rock, and railway cars dumping the soil. Also included is footage of a barge used to transport a steam shovel and locomotive, and the offloading of the steam shovel from the barge. The film also shows the clearing of land with a brush fire and men using hoses to control the fire, as well as men working on the track. There are several shots of unidentified individuals, possibly including Vancouver Harbour Commissioners, throughout the film; Sam Magoffin appears briefly with three other men at 15:56 (third from the left). The film finishes with a shot of locomotives moving soil, with the Vancouver skyline in the background.
