Tourism B.C. Marketplace Progam [Program] - Expo 86

Item is "Marketplace Program" produced for EXPO 86 and Tourism BC. Major exhibition in BC Pavilion for EXPO 86. Multi-screen laser disc interactive display. Laser discs were very new at this time and cost over $2500 each to manufacture. This laser disc was produced to be used with specially designed players that would allow for touch-screen interaction from visitors to the B.C. Pavilion. These machines no longer exist; to get an idea of what options were made available pause the playback to view what the touch-screen displays looked like.
Item includes visual vignettes featuring footage to represent various geographical areas of the province of British Columbia. Theme music plays in the background of the scenes; no dialogue. Brief written descriptions of each area of the province precede each section of footage. At 00:10:23 - 00:10:24 screen shots of all of the various touch screen menu screens appear - to see these please slow down the playback and pause for each. Starting at 00:10:26 the footage plays out that would have been associated and parsed out for the various selected menu choices. At 00:12:08-00:12:11 more screen shots of selections flash by, again slow or pause to view these fully. Starting at 00:12:12 more groupings of clips of British Columbia can be viewed. Dragon Parade 1958

Item is an amateur film of the 1958 Chinatown Dragon Parade. The film includes views of spectators lined up along the parade route, buildings and signs for businesses along Pender Street, and cars and groups participating in the parade. Footage includes many shots of men in a large dragon costume, the Vancouver Fire Department Band, and the Chinese Freemasons and Chinese Community School floats.

Miss Chinatown 1960

Item is an amateur film of the 1960 Miss Chinatown competition. Film includes footage of the evening gown, Chinese dress, public speaking and talent competitions, the selection of pageant finalists, and the crowning of the winner.

Item is an amateur film of the Chinatown Parade, likely taken in 1960. The film includes views of Pender Street and spectators lined up along the parade route, and cars and groups participating in the parade, possibly including Miss Chinatown and pageant runner-ups.

Item is an annotated photocopy of a map of Chinatown showing streets, buildings and the number of stories in each building. Includes the area bounded by Taylor Street, Hastings Street, Gore Avenue and Keefer Street. The Provincial Historic Site Boundary, designated February 2, 1971, is drawn and indicated on the map. Notations pertaining to the boundary and the indication of the number of stories in each building appear on the map.

The fonds consists of Paul Yee’s personal correspondence and records of academic achievement, writing and research files, subject files, photographs, and sound recordings, as well as publications and ephemera that he collected. These records relate to Yee's activities as a writer, historian, activist, and archivist in Vancouver and Toronto.

In addition, the fonds includes photographs, correspondence, and other records of some of Yee’s immediate family members, including his Aunt Lillian and Uncle Foon Wong, and their close friends. The fonds also contains textual records, publications, ephemera, and photographs relating to the activities of the Chinese Cultural Centre in Vancouver and the Pender Guy Radio Co-operative, as well records relating to the functions of fraternal associations such as the Wong Kong Har Tong and Hoy Yin Association in Vancouver, and the Duncan, B.C., Branch of the Chinese Nationalist League (Kuo Min Tang).

Film is a promotional video for the province of British Columbia. Focusing on different sections of the province in turn the video highlights the features and tourist attractions of each. According to the donor this is most likely the original of the final production with sound and image. Photograph album : Parade of Oriental Fashions, 18th Convention of the Canadian Food Processors Association and Year of the Serpent banquet

Item is an album containing photographs of the Parade of Oriental Fashions event at the 18th convention of the Canadian Food Processors Association as well as a program for the convention. The parade took place on January 22, 1965 in the Mai Tai Room of the Bayshore Inn. Photographs show female models wearing Asian dress, a fashion show and attendees.

The album also includes photographs of the Year of the Serpent Chinese New Year Festival Banquet held at the W.K. Gardens on February 26, 1965. The banquet was held in conjunction with the Spring Carnival Committee, and was sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Vancouver Visitors Bureau and the Chinese community. Included are photographs of various Vancouver pageant queens, Miss San Francisco Chinatown, Miss Chinatown USA first princess, and the crowning of a young woman with a serpent headdress and crown.

Notes at the back of the album list orders received for copies and provide some identification of those individuals appearing in the photographs.
