Collector/curator's description reads: “Circa 1940s, Vancouver. Photo of a group of men, women and children sitting around a long banquet table. Occasion for the gathering is unknown. The full frame contained the Yucho Chow circular seal. There is Chinese writing around the perimeter of the frame.”

Corobotiuc - William

Collector/curator's description reads: “Circa 1949, Vancouver. Photo of William (Bill) George Corobotiuc. Born in Vancouver July 20, 1943 and died November 28, 2006. Came from a Croatian family. He worked at Workers Compensation Board and was known for his love of quotes, using them every opportunity he could. ‘Stop and smell the roses.’ ‘You get what you pay for.’ ‘You snooze, you lose.’ He was also a devoted vinyl record collector and amassed thousands of record albums over the years, mostly rock n' roll.”

Collector/curator’s description reads: “1940s, Vancouver. Evelina Gilda Clozza (aka Evelina Walter) was born in Vancouver Jan. 2, 1921. This photo was taken just after she had finished secretarial school in Vancouver. She grew up on a float camp while her parents hand logged on the coast around Ocean Falls. They moved into Ocean Falls so Evelina could start school.”

Collector/curator's description reads: “1940s, Vancouver. Portrait of Shwu-Hoang Po Hing, an actress. This photo was found in the collection of Louis Gain Wai, a businessman in Vancouver's Chinatown who owned the Chung King restaurant on East Pender Street. He was a big supporter of the arts, and in his collection are several photos of this actress.”

Collector/curator's description reads: “1940s, Vancouver. Photo of Wong and Mah family members. Back row, left to right: Robert Mah; Adelaine (Mah) Wong, and Edward Wong. Children: Ivan Wong (on lap), Lee Lin Choy (seated); Ernie Wong; Sam Gong (seated) and Alfie Wong (on lap). Robert was a student and went on to become a draftsman. Edward owned and operated Park General Store on 269 Powell Street. He also worked as a real estate agent.”

Wong - Kown Fow -1940s

Collector/curator’s description reads: “1940s, Vancouver. Head and shoulders portrait of Wong Kown Fow. He was born and educated in China. In 1936, the Wong Kung Har Tong in Vancouver wrote a letter offering Kown Fow a teaching job at Mon Keong School. He accepted and taught at the school from 1936 to 1947 and, for unknown reasons, he returned to China. A year later he was recruited, yet again, to come back to the Mon Keong School. Kown Fow returned to Canada and taught at the school until his death. Some of his students recall that he was boring and strict. Others remembered him as a good teacher, but not someone who could read a room. On one occasion he was MC'ing a funeral. Toward the end of the commemoration he went onstage and said ‘Oh, one more thing. To all the board of directors of the Wong's, there will be a board meeting, please attend.’”

Collector/curator’s description reads: “1940s, Vancouver. Wedding photo of Harry Gong and Leah Wong and their unidentified bridesmaid (May Wong?) and unidentified best man. Harry was the only Chinese Canadian to serve as a Spitfire fighter pilot during WWII.”

Collector/curator’s description reads: “1940s, Vancouver. Wedding photo of Albert Lee and Daisy (?). Daisy is not wearing a wedding dress. The couple could not afford to buy a fancy wedding dress. So Daisy made a suit that matched her husband's.”

Opera performance - 1940s

Collector/curator's description reads: “C. 1940s, Vancouver. Photo of an opera performer in costume and on stage. The performer looks to be the actress Shwu-Hoang Po Hing. Two young Chinese girls and two adult men, one of whom is Louis Gain Wai, the owner of the Chung King Restaurant in Vancouver's Chinatown and a big supporter of the arts. They are on stage with the actress and appear to be preparing to offer the actress some gifts. This is the first of two photos taken at this performance.”
