Sivucha - John and Okcienia Family - c.1950

Collector/curator's description reads: “1950s, Vancouver. Photo of the Sivucha Family, a family of Russian descent. Back row, left to right: John Sivucha and Okcienia. Front row, left to right: Walter, Mary (16 years) and Lorraine. John arrived in Canada from Russia in the 1920s. His wife came in the 1930s. John worked in the shipyards and at Burrard Dry Dock. They lived at 847 Georgia Street. Their eldest daugther, Mary, worked as a secretary. Lorrian became a school teacher and their son Walter became a physician and practiced for 50 years in Coquitlam, B.C.”

Old Vancouver 1948

Item is a home movie which documents Stanley Park and the outer harbour of Vancouver. It pictures pedestrians in Stanley Park and on the sea wall, and various animal exhibits in the Stanley Park Zoo in early spring, and includes pan views of the lighthouse and North Vancouver from the Stanley Park sea wall, the collapsed 2nd Narrows Bridge in the harbour (collapsed June 1958) and Navy ships.

The film documents the April 23, 1952 United Grain Growers fire from different angles and a different fire on the North Shore near Lion's Gate Bridge. The film also shows scenes of Queen Elizabeth Park in Spring with views of over Vancouver. The film ends with an airforce aerial show from a view on the ground in a field and one of "Vancouver's last streetcars" giving free rides on the Hastings East Line on April 24, 1955.

1958 : A year to remember

Item is a film containing highlights of British Columbia's centennial year in Vancouver. Includes shots of an antique car parade, a tall ship at dock, naval vessels, street decorations in Vancouver, Chinese Freemasons parade (with drill team, dragon dance, etc.), a powwow, horse racing at Exhibition Park, PNE parade, and the last of the region's interurban streetcars. Film also includes footage showing the aftermath of the Second Narrows Bridge collapse.

The film includes views of spectators lined up along the parade route, buildings and signs for businesses along Pender Street, and cars and groups participating in the parade. Footage includes many shots of men in a large dragon costume, the Vancouver Fire Department Band, and the Chinese Freemasons and Chinese Community School floats.

The bride is filmed in her house and driving with her family to the church. The ceremony is filmed from above and behind. The family then travels to the reception hall where the bride and groom are photographed with their family. There is a reception line, speeches, and dancing.

It pictures the placement of the beams and walls, the cement flooring and ceiling, and the installation of window and lighting, followed by painting and paving of the exterior, and installation of the store sign,

Chan - Walter - 1955

Collector/curator’s description reads: “1955, Vancouver. Head and shoulders portrait of Walter Wah Koh Chan. He was married to Strathcona community activist Mary Chan. Walter Chan was a leader in the fight to save Strathcona and Chinatown from urban renewal and the freeway. He wrote articles for the Chinese press rallying the Chinese community. Along with his wife, he made speeches and was one of the three initial Co-chairs of SPOTA. To earn a living, he worked as a Manager in Chinatown in the family store: Trans Nation Emporium which sold curio and antiques in the front (Pender Street side) and Chinese foods and herbal medicines in the back (Columbia Street). As Walter was educated and scholarly, he worked for the clan association Chin Wing Chun Tong as secretary treasurer. He wrote letters for illiterate members, he managed their books, he made speeches at gatherings etc. He had a chronic illness that was undiagnosed. He died 58. Hence, few people remember what he did for the community. His wife Mary Chan, carried on the community activism work for another 30 years.”

Charles Soloman and Mary Chow Anniversary - 1955

Collector/curator’s description reads: “1955. Location unknown. On location photo of Charles Soloman Chow (younger brother of Yucho Chow) and his wife Mary Chow (nee Feica) on the occasion of their 45th wedding anniversary. Mary (nee Feica) was of Romanian descent and the couple lived in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Charles died on June 27, 1957 at the age of 74 years.”

Stanley Park and [North] Shore - Horseshoe Bay and Malahat Hwy. - Mr. and Mrs. Tom Fowlers to Victoria - returned to Vancouver

Item is a film showing the view from inside an automobile travelling the road along the Stanley Park causeway and going across the Lions Gate Bridge towards the North Shore. Film contains scenes from within the car, the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal, aboard the ferry, scenes along the Malahat highway, Duncan, Ladysmith, Malahat Lookout, Victoria Auto Court Motel. The film concludes with a return trip to Vancouver, driving across the Granville Street Bridge, through downtown and across a viaduct.

Aulack - Germail Singh (RCAF) with sisters - 1954

Collector/curator's description reads: “1954, Vancouver. George Germel Singh Aulack in his RCAF uniform along with his sisters: (left to right) Gaily, Chindow, Germail and Mindow. Germail was a Flying Officer with the RCAF. He was born in India but arrived in Canada with his mother in 1934 when he was two years old. This photo was taken at South Airport (or Van Airport in those days) in 1954, two weeks before he died in St Hubert, Quebec while on a rescue flight with the RCAF. He was only 23. Their parents were Aulack Giana Singh and Tante Kaur Singh.”

Collector/curator's description reads: “Circa 1953, Vancouver. Photo of the Gill family. Front row left to right: Ganga Singh Gill (cousin); Malkit Gill (daughter, age 3); Kartar Kaur Gill (wife); Indar Singh Gill; Nash Gill (son, age 5, currently a lawyer in Abbotsford, B.C.); Joginder Singh Gill, Shah (brother). Back row left to right: Kartar Singh Sidhu (brother-in-law); Mohinder Singh Gill (brother); and Pal Singh Gill (cousin). Indar Singh Gill immigrated to British Columbia, Canada in 1930 from Dhudike, Punjab, India at the age of 17 years. He worked in sawmills at Sooke Lake & Paldi, Vancouver Island. He returned to India in 1947 and brought his wife, Kartar Kaur Gill and his newborn son Nash back to Canada in 1949. In 1950, Indar Singh Gill ventured into the wood-sawdust fuel business as the Indar Fuel Company operating from Mission, B.C. until 1958. In 1960 he constructed a new state of the art sawmill in Mission, B.C. and operated it as Fraser Valley Sawmills until 1964. In 1980, he again constructed a shake and shingle mill in Fort Langley, which is still presently operating.”

Stanley Park - Winter Skate - New Immigrant Arrived Airport

Item is a home movie which pictures Lions Gate Bridge from the Stanley Park side, the view from Coal Harbour, and outdoor skating and tennis in Lost Lagoon and/or Beaver Lake in the wintertime. The second half features immigrants disembarking at Vancouver airport, exiting United Air Lines' customs and immigrations and taking photographs. Lew Parry's Steet Metal Worker's Local 280 float sculpture is briefly filmed.

Lee - Jack Joe - c.1951

Collector/curator’s description reads: “C. 1951, Vancouver. Portrait of Jack Joe Lee taken at Yucho Chow Studio located at 512 Main Street. The sons of Yucho Chow (either Peter or Philip Chow) would have taken this photo. Jack Joe Lee was May 16, 1894 in Kwangtung, China. He made a living as a tailor and worked for many years at Modernize Tailors when it was located at 1 West Pender St. Vancouver, B.C. It appears Jack also ran his own shop for a period of time as one of his tailoring books is stamped: Lee the Tailor, 295 Pender St. E[ast] Vancouver, B.C. Besides making clothes for paying customers, Jack also made clothes for his family. One nephew recalled that the family could not afford clothes so the only new garments they ever owned were made by Jack. Jack was remembered as a generous man. Every week he took to take his grandchildren to the grocery store and bought them Life Savers or penny candy. He also loved to take the extended family out for dim sum and allowed the grand children to select whatever items they wanted. Jack never spoke much English. Near the end of his life he moved in with one of his children and their family, and enjoyed sitting in his rocking chair. He passed away in Vancouver on May 28, 1973.”
